need engine block for 2.8 firebird
i have a 89 firebird with a 2.8 lb8 engine in it and while i was working on it it rained and water got in the intake manifold and it messed up my engine and its water locked and it looks like crap. i dont have money for a new car and i love my firebird so what would be cheaper a new 2.8 block? or to take it somewhere and have a shop machine work it so i could rebuild it? and i need very cheap website to find a 2.8l lb8 block. i cant find it anywhere. ooooor would it be cheaper and easier to get a 3.1l online and swap it? thx for all your help guys!

Was it out in the rain for weeks or what?
Change the oil & filter, pull the plugs & crank the engine over to push out the water. Add alittle oil to each cylinder & put new plugs in it. It should start up.

gaskets arent hard to replace. much easier than replacing the whole engine.

Well I also have rust build up on my cylinder walls and and bassicly every cast iron is rusted I can hand crank it but it's harder so think I should rebuild it or just spray something on it that removes rust?

pull the plugs and spray some wd40 in the plug holes and keep cranking it over. since you need to redo the head gaskets anyway from the sound of it, go ahead and pop off the heads and get a good look at the cylinder bores.

Well I got the whole top part of the engine off already it's cylinder block and there's old oil mixed withrain water coating the inside of the engine. Is there anything I can spray on it to get rid of rust and old oil?

wd 40
its a water repelant and lubricant. itll get rid of the water, and should help break the surface rust loose.

Re: need engine block for 2.8 firebird
well i was replacing the head gaskets, and the lower intake you have to silicone cause theres no gasket for it but we missed a tiny piece so the engine made a whistling sound and it sounded like it came from there, so i took it back apart and a bolt broke so i had to wait to get that piece but while i was waiting for the piece it rained and rain got in the intake manifold. when i put it back together i filled the radiator and water was coming out of the valve covers so i tried to start anyways it didnt do anything so i gave up for awhile and then like 2 months later i took apart the engine trying to fix it cause i need a car and i see this mess lol. that how this happened.

yea, that looks a lot worse than you were decribing it. it can be fixed, but youll have to pull the engine and tear it apart. might as well upgrade to the 3.4 at that point.

take the block out, remove the rotating assembly, and take the parts to the machine shop to be hot tanked, and possibly have the bores molybrushed. thats about $150-200 worth of work right there. then you gotta buy new bearings and gaskets to put it all back together.
