SR 350 cam recomendations
Hi Folks,
I am in the market for a new cam for my SR 350, I was looking at the Lingenfelter 219 single pattern cam but not sure about what else has been proven out there, I currently have a very mild cam in there and have gotten bored with the performance of it , thx GTA

not entirely sure 58 cc heads with 0.29 gaskets stock L98 short block with the factory flat top pistons>>

Based on your current cam, which is very mild, and estimated compression of 10.3 to 1 assuming factory flat tops are around -7cc of relief, I'd say something like a 224/230 on that setup will rip!
ZZ409 would work good, LPE 219 is a nice proven cam too, and so is the XFI 268, although I'd go bigger and run a custom XFI 224/230 setup or one of the high lift magnum lobes for abit less aggressive lobe. I assume the springs in the head are the 8017's. Should be good to .600" and sub 6500 rpm use for most cams. That intake would be done by 5800 anyway.
Some of the california guys are running the XFI 280 on extensive ported superram/TPI setups and it works great on a 350 with good compression but it favors the larger 195cc heads and miniram/hsr intakes.
I'd order a custom 224/230 based on the XFI lobes on a 112 lsa. Or custom based on the magnum high lift lobes, lobe 3109 intake and 3110 exhaust. 220/224 at .050 with .544/.533 lift. Should work well.
Or even the magnum shelf grind, 280HR, # 08-430-8. 280/280 224/224 .560/.560 on a 110, just order it on a 112 for abit better idle and tuning.
Lunati has a few good grinds too, 219/227 stuff that would work well, and a 227/231 grind that should work well.
Lots of options here, but I like a 220-224 deg cam on intake for a 350 and moderate lift, .530-.560" with decent flowing heads... Just my opinion.

Those the 180 eliminator heads? If so, they should be as good as the old 190s and I know for a fact those heads can support 350whp and that cam definately can support 350whp on the right setup. So it should make good numbers with superam. Probably mid 300's, 340-360whp depending as long as no valve float. Possibly more with ported intake. XFI280 and 195's are good to 400whp so with the 180's and slightly smaller i'd see 375 being possible if the intake could support it.

I honestly think its alittle too much for 180's but it could work. Its gonna have a pretty mean idle but definately driveable. i've tuned a mild L98 with that cam on old afr 190's with HSR and its a high 11 second car if it had valvesprings that could handle it. It went 12.2 on a so-so 60 ft. It was at 330whp at 5600 rpm before it started floating. By extending the graph it would have been in the 350-360whp range by 6400-6500 I think. Not bad for a low comp L98 with those so-so heads. Guys using the new 195's are seeing near 400whp. Its a capable cam that likes alittle bit of compression with a 350 but I think the 224 lobe is much better suited to a milder 350, especially when limited to a longer runner intake like the superram. The superram will support mid 5500 rpm peaks and hold power alittle bit after, but the 280 really wants to go to 6500. The 268xfi is a powerful little cam too tho, its made 350's whp and rev'd to 6000 rpm. All good rpm ranges for a superram intake.

thx for the reply, Is there a off the shelf grind # that you would recomend for my set up or should i inquire about a custom grind? For what its worth i'm already over the 300 whp with my little 264 grind...so i want to reap as much benifit from a swap as i can.....the thought of removing that SR intake gives me cold chills...GTA

Well comp will make the 224/230 xfi grind just give them a call and ask for it.
Other shelf grinds i'd be interested in trying...
60121 Lunati voodoo. LT1/LT4 cam but works if you cut the dowel pin down abit. 221/229. Abit milder with very aggressive lobes. It should do similar power to the 268XFI, maybe abit more. Not a bad cam either. Designed by cam great Harold Brookshire I do believe. I know he did alot of voodoo series cams and other lunati grinds
Crane/GM 846 cam...another popular cam in LT1 world but sbc too. 222/230 but its abit lazier lobes than most cams these days. Soft on the valve train which is good for long term durability.
If you wanted an XE Comp grind, go to the XR276HR with 1.6 rockers. Should be a nice grind. I'd even keep it on a 110 lsa I like tighter lsa cams but 112 will be abit easier to tune.

I have an XFI 268 and so far I like the power... I used to have a mild Powermax 2032 cam and the 268 is quite a noticeable change. I am wanting to step up to 1.6 rockers from my 1.5's though to get some more lift. Maybe some port work and move up to 2.05 valves...

I'm running the Comp XE series XR269HR grind in my SR'd 355, which is 218/224 on the duration. I've been really happy with the power it produces, but I'm thinking if I ever decide to upgrade the cam, I'd like to try the XR276HR that Orr mentioned, which is 224/230 and a bit higher lift. I already have one of them sitting in a box in the garage, so it's already bought and paid for. If you prefer just getting an "off the shelf" grind, that'd probably be a good choice for yours. Btw, they're 112 LSA off the shelf. Another benefit to the XE series is they have pretty aggressive ramps, but not nearly as aggressive as the XFI series, so they're easier on the valvetrain components.

268 will have a mild cam sound...not a hard lope. 280xfi has alot of lope in a 355" motor. Sounds good tho.
You may like that 276HR for this motor...also known as the CC503 cam in the lt1 world. You likely can find the cc503 in the classifeds on camaroz28.com and get a cam for cheap. Cc503 is the 112 lsa version, the 276HR is the 110 lsa version. Thats the main difference.

Really? thats interesting. Doesnt that LPE 219 cam have .560 lift with 1.6 rockers? Those 8020 springs are rated to .550 which is a safer rating that leaves some clearance to coil bind, but you would be exceeding those springs ratings for best reliability. I'd definately swap them out if possible. 120lbs seat and 300lbs open is no good. My buddy's old AFR 190's has those springs with a 280xfi cam and its floating horribly after 5700 rpm. WAY short of its true powerband.
