I need a fuel pump...Bosch, OEM, or Walbro?

I need to replace my fuel pump. Stock 305 TPI right now; but soon to be a 350-400 hp 355 TPI. Any suggestions?

Walbro seems to be a pretty popular choice of FP, oem is ptless imo, if I have to replace something and can get a better part for anywhere close to the same amount as the OEM part, then I upgrade. I have a 255 lph chinese pump that I got for like $55. Seems to work fine, but then my car has other issues keeping it from running currently, so I can't speak to the reliability of it atm.

Re: I need a fuel pump...Bosch, OEM, or Walbro?

My recommendation is to run to napa. Pick up the Carter pump they have. I put one in my 85' trans am and It rocks. My ol' lady left the key on twice and the pump ran all night until it killed the battery. I charged up the battery and turned the key, Blam. She fired right up.

I could have spent $55 on the chinese junk, but I spent $90 on the carter and I am glad I did. The chinese hunk of junk would have burned up the first time the key was left on. When it comes to anything fuel related, Carter is the **** !!!.

Btw, my Trans-Am is a 305 tpi. It's running 3" catback exhaust, Bosch +2 plugs, MSD 8.5 wires and a E-coil 50,000v coil with the MSD #8401 kit and a decent cam. The Carter has no problem supplyin' go go juice.

Fuel pump isn't supposed to run with key pwr, should only prime at that stage, and not run till key is in crank position, just fyi...

Re: I need a fuel pump...Bosch, OEM, or Walbro?

I don't wanna knock you guys that seem to be having good luck with the Carter pumps, but honestly I've got a Carter pump sitting on the workbench that's dead as a doornail! If you plan on doing all those mods sometime down the road, just go ahead and throw a Walbro 255 pump in there and call it a day. I actually put the Walbro 255 in mine when I still had the anemic 305 TBI motor in the car. I've been running a Superrammed, AFR-headed 350 in it for about 2 years now, and the Walbro keeps up just fine. I've probably had that pump in the car for about 5 or 6 years now, and it still works perfect. If you want to get a good deal on a Walbro pump, go to racetronix.com. They have good prices on them, and they also offer a wiring upgrade kit you can purchase along with the pump that makes the whole system work even better than the factory wiring setup. I recommend Racetronix because they guarantee their pumps to be genuine Walbros. There's a slew of online sellers, especially on Ebay, that offer "Walbro" pumps that are actually cheap, Chinese knockoffs. Once again, I'm not necessarily dissing on the Carter pumps, but they're really more of a stock replacement unit, whereas the Walbro 255 is a high performance pump that'll support any future mods you plan to do. Btw, the Walbro pump is a bit noisier than the stock pump, but that's just due to the design. It's gear to gear instead of vane driven. I only notice it when I turn the key on and haven't started the car yet. Really don't notice it once the car's running. Just wanted to let you know the extra noise is perfectly normal.
