car starts too fast?

is it normal that as soon as i turn the key it fires right up, like i cant even hear it crank. could this be caused by incorrect timing ? another symptom i have is the headers get red hot within a minute of run time. it is a fully rebuilt 350

Re: car starts too fast?

I don't know about the quick start, but I wouldn't think it was a bad thing. As for the headers getting red hot, are you meaning a visible orange/red glow or just hot as in you can feel a lot of heat from them? Headers are thinner than stock manifolds and put out more heat, so that would be normal. Glowing orange/red = not so normal.

Re: car starts too fast?

could be a major timing issue, or lean

Re: car starts too fast?

I doubt it is the choke. Sounds way lean to me. What about the water temperature, what's it reading?

Re: car starts too fast?

the 190 is within 1 minute as well? I am wondering if the overbore has anything to do with it?

Re: car starts too fast?

no it takes anywhere from 7 to 10 minutes to get at 190 at idle, and im not sure i wouldnt think it would be a problem.

Re: car starts too fast?

hmmm, those glowing headers are puzzling. Seems lean, but 190 is right on. Are the plugs the correct heat range?

Re: car starts too fast?

I could think of a couple of things that may contribute. how old are the injectors?(you never said if it was tbi tpi or carbureted) May be bad and leaking causing the quick start? A better theory may be low compression from valves/timing being off, taking less time to get the motor spinning fast enough with the starter to run. blow by on the exhaust valves could make combustion occur in the headers, which could cause the glowing headers. check timing first then do compression tests on the cylinders.

Re: car starts too fast?

what exactly could cause blowby on the exhaust valves, bc i ran open headers for around 300 miles but i always covered the end up after i shut it off

Timing as has been said, too much slack in timing chain, weak valve springs, bent valves, or built up carbon on valve seat. Like i said check your compression. i think that's a tool you can borrow from the auto parts store or theyre not expensive to buy
