92 Firebird 5.0 dies and won't restart

I have a 92 firebird, 5.0 and once in awhile after the car has been running about 10 min. the car will die while driving. It will crank but won't start, after the veh. sits overnight it will start just fine. Seems to be worse when the outside temp is high

Have the ignition module in the distributor checked, when they start failing it's the heat that causes this kind of symptom. If that is the problem and you replace it, be sure and coat the bottom with the included grease to keep it from happening again. Could be other things, but this is the easiest to check

The trouble with having the module tested is that yours is only failing when it's hot. It will test fine at room temperature. You almost have to just replace it to be sure. The one way to atleast verify that the ignition is the cause of the no start is to check spark when it won't start.

I have a bit more info, I started the veh. and let it run in the driveway for about 20 min. with the air on. I turned it off and tried to restart it. It turned over normally and tried to start but wouldn't. I sprayed some starter fluid, it started and then died. Sounds like no fuel. Probably the camaro/firebird fuel pump.

Still sounds like ignition module to me - it's a much cheaper ($30) and easier attempt (no dropping the tank/exhaust/axle) than a fuel pump! The ECM controls the pump - if it doesn't get a constant ignition signal (ie hot bad ignition module), then the injectors won't fire (which seems like no gas).

Re: 92 Firebird 5.0 dies and won't restart

I see Camaronewbie's point, but that doesn't explain why he still had spark. Use a fuel pressure gauge to monitor fuel pressure. When the no start occurs, verify no fuel pressure, then check for power on the tan or gray wire at the connector just in front of the tank, coming from the floor pan. If you have power there and no fuel pressure, it's the pump. If you have no power, It may be due to a defective relay or the ECM not recieving crank referrence pulses from the ICM. If you have fuel pressure and still no start, it's more likely an injector or injector drive issue. It's fairly common for the injectors to suffer heat related failure. For both banks to drop out would be unusual but not impossible. You can check injector drive with a noid light, injector coils with an ohmmeter.
