Summit 383 Block missing oil plug

I purchased a summit 383 block for my new motor that I am doing. I was reading the other day that there is some type of oil plug that is taken out of the block during the cleaning process and is never put back in. Without this plug in there, I guess the oil will bypass the filter. What type of plug and size do I need to buy so that I can re-install it into my block?

1/2" on the 2 piece RMS blocks. I'm not sure if they changed it on the 1 piece RMS.

Re: Summit 383 Block missing oil plug

never put back in
Pretty strong language there d00d!!

A more appropriate way to put it would be, "is often left out".

Definitely check, but you may well find that it's there. If you take off the rear main cap, you will see 4 holes. 2 are bolt holes. The other one on the pass side of the block is for the oil pump drive rod. The other on the driver's side is where the plug in question goes. Should be around 1" or thereabouts up in there. If you can look up in there and see a single horizontal hole in the side of that passage, and then the plug just past that, it's good to go. If you see 2 horizontal holes and no plug, then you need one. It goes between the 2 holes, right past a little step up in there.

Re: Summit 383 Block missing oil plug

So where exactly can I buy this 1/2" plug? Is it a certain type of plug?

Any parts store.

It's basically a freeze plug. Might even BE a freeze plug, in some applications. It's also the same plug as the 3 in the front of the block around the cam. Should cost no more than a few cents.

Look before you buy. It may well already be there.

Re: Summit 383 Block missing oil plug

So it's just a solid 1/2" plug that is pressed all the way into the hole?

Re: Summit 383 Block missing oil plug

It's a regular cup plug. The bore gets smaller at the installed location, so drive it in until it stops. Check that it's far enough that the holes aren't obstructed, though.

Can see it in the picture, up & right of the center of pic. The shiny piece in the oil passage. Note that it is a cup shaped plug.
