84 Camaro Fuel issue
Well my 84 Z28 305 is not starting, even with a few pumps of the gas pedal (I have to start it this way every time anyway). I just read a thread about fuel pump relays and I might check that out (if I can find it) to see if anything is burnt or what-not.
But let's just assume that's not the problem....I'm in the process of trying to change my fuel pump, and I don't know what to do with the gas lines. If I take it off, will the gas keep pouring out? I took one line off, the larger of the two coming into the pump, and gas steadily poured out. When I took the smaller one off, gas slowly poured out of the pump where the line went in.
Is this normal? And if not/so what do I do to stop the lines to change the pump?

Depressurize the gas tank by opening ur gas cap...
Change ur filter while ur at it. Its in the carb

Also, tilt the flexible fuel line up to a point above the point where they change from steel to rubber
And don't worry, your always gonna lose some fuel when you do something like this, that's what floor-dry is for

Another trick - lock pliers - just tight enough to pinch off the fuel at rubber hose, not tight enough to hurt the rubber hose.

Re: 84 Camaro Fuel issue
Thanks guys, hopefully this will get her going. Unfortunately there's more trouble.
My neighbor and I took my carb off to see if there was buildup anywhere, also changing the fuel filter(it was bad). Put everything back on, I'm not sure if I placed the flex line the way you mentioned, at the time I hadn't read this.
But I get in, she turns over and I give her gas and she roars to life and dies. Start her again and try to keep the gas down to see if she'll stay on. After a few tries and keeping the rpms really high she manages to stay on and idle, very roughly might I add. Up until now though, wouldn't even start.
I drive down the block and notice that the gas stays down a lot heavier than before. So I might have gotten something into my carb affecting the throttle. Drive around some more and decide to use choke/carb cleaner to see if it'll help the throttle.
Start her back up, roughly, and drive a little bit again. I stop and see how she idles again and I hear her dying so I quickly try to get back home (400 ft away) and halfway there she completely dies and I glide in.
I check the engine and it's pretty damn hot, so I think my coolant my not be circulating to add on to everything.
So.....
I am going to check the flex line to see if that's part of the problem, but I'm not sure.
1) Could I have possibly gotten something into my carb with it out, causing it to choke?
2) Could the fuel pump/pump relay still be a problem?
3) How the heck do you put a fuel pump back on?? I did it the first time I ever tried, and now I cannot put my new one or old one back on for the life of me
4) What about my distributor cap and rotor? Could there just be worn down contacts that I need to replace?

Re: 84 Camaro Fuel issue
What are you having trouble with putting the fuel pump on specifically? Are u struggling to move the push rod out of the way? I usually use a needle nose for that.
My 87 has two fuel pumps. One on the block and one in the tank. I'm not sure if 84 had twO pumps but I'm sure someone can clear that up. Anyway, if so, your problem could be related to the Pump in the tank.
I don't understand how a fuel issue turns into a coolant issue. What does your Gage (water temp) read.
The flex line I mentioned was supposed to be tilted up ONLY when u have it disconnected. Liquid won't flow uphill.

Re: 84 Camaro Fuel issue
Oh okay then yeah that's how I had the flex line. I'm still trying to get that rod out of the way, but now it's light outside so I can do that.
But I was saying that on top of all my problems I may have a coolant issue. My car was running relatively okay for ten minutes and then she died. The engine was really hot, but then again it was almost 90 degrees today so I'm not sure if it wasn't normal. It could have just died from the carb being blocked, but I've already had coolant problems.
My water temp guage actually just went out two weeks ago, and even after sitting for hours and running for hours, the needle stays too high, way too high. So that's broken and I can't get a good idea without that.
I still have to check the fuel pump relays, that could be a factor.

And that's exactly it. After I have the rod pushed up, how does the pump fit in place? With the rod up I still can't manage to get the pump on correctly. It won't even line up with the bolts.

Rotate the engine 180 degrees.... The lobe on the cam is probably blocking the pushrod from sliding up farther.

Re: 84 Camaro Fuel issue
And get a cheap water temp gauge asap.
There easy to hook up and if ur truely having coolent issues, not knowing ur water temp is an easy way to fry ur motor

Re: 84 Camaro Fuel issue
Hmm well I'll see what's going on then....
I could possibly have already done irreparable damage without knowing the temperature. I did notice after the engine was up for ten minutes and died, the water line was very hot too.
This may be over my head now, but thanks for the advice. I will probably have it towed to a shop down the road.

You would know if you blew it up because of overheating. Doesn't sound like you did. Get that pump in, check ur relay, go from there. Don't waste ur money with a tow

Re: 84 Camaro Fuel issue
the fuel pump relay such as i have in my '87 that runs off a carb. there are two fuel pumps on my car; the one on the block and the one in the tank.
there has yet to be any confirmation on whether '84 had two fuel pumps. i will look farther into this...

Re: 84 Camaro Fuel issue
I can confirm they have two pumps. I have an 84 L69 car that I'm restomodding, I pulled the gas tank, there is a pump in the tank, as well as the one on the engine.
