Drivers side squeaking

Hi, i have a 12,759 original mileage 305 tpi. The car was sitting for 13 yrs in my garage. Been garaged its whole life. Started it up in late july and all was fine. A month later it began to squeak, and now it's just unbearable. The squeaking is coming from the drivers side, around the air conditioning belt.

Probably bad bearing in A/C or P/S pump pulley. You have V belts, right? Remove the A/C belt and start car - no more squeak = bad A/C. Same for P/S.

I agree.

For a serpentine setup you can get a mechanic's stethoscope or put a screwdriver to your ear if you're feeling adventurous.

Driver's side sounds like Power steering, though. Could be that pump, though I've never seen that. AC goes often because it's got a clutch engage system which tends to... die.

Try and narrow it down to one of the pulleys.

What I have is the V belt system. I have a feeling its the ac belt that's making the squeaking noise. If the ac compressor clutch is dead, how do i replace that? I got 25 year old belts on all of the pumps and compressors.

Re: Drivers side squeaking

If it's the AC compressor, the only way I know how to fix it is drop $100+ on a new one. I think you're supposed to take it to a professional to have the freon discharged. There's only a handful of bolts that hold it in place, though. It's not too big a job in and of itself to do.

If you're AC system still works, the route to go might be taking it in. If you've got a leak in the metal lines somewhere anyway... There's no harm in just unhooking it and leaving it until you want to drop money into it.

Re: Drivers side squeaking

Actually, when my dad owned the car, he took out an extra ac compressor from a camaro back in 88. So i have an extra one. I have heat, all the freon leaked out tho, so the ac just blows outside temp air. Heat works fine tho. The squeaking usually starts about 10 mins after started.

Re: Drivers side squeaking

That almost makes it sound like a water pump, if it's starting to squeak after it comes up to temp. Could be a bearing going. You might want to try the stethoscope thing on that.

Which side is the water pump on? And what does it look like? Could it be the worn out belt making the squeaking noise as well? I'll try the stethoscope thing.

Being that old, you have nothing to lose by replacing them--and should--though I'd be surprised if they're the cause of the issue.

Re: Drivers side squeaking

Sorry for all the questions, i'm still rather amatuerish with cars. If the bearings are gone, how would i replace them? Replace the whole water pump?

The pump cools the motor, so yes, failure would be serious.

Re: Drivers side squeaking

Resolution, the belts were worn out and kept making noise. Should I replace the water pump anyway?

I probably would, but I'm **** in such matters. Many will have the "if it isn't broken, don't fix it' attitude, which I can't argue with.

Re: Drivers side squeaking

do you have electric fans or is your fan mounted to your water pump. could be bearings in the clutch fan since its doing it when it warms up?

Re: Drivers side squeaking

I understand what that's like, i'm the same way. A simple rock ding or a little mark drives me up the wall. If i know it's there it'll bother me. I'll buy it when i get my next pay check. Thanks for the help,i appreciate it.

I have stock fans. No sig mods have been done to anything. Still got the original gatorback tires. It's weird because it'll squeak loud some days and then others it'll barely be noticable. It is the belts tho. I'm just waiting for my other 2 gates belts to come before i can change them
