tpi cam help

I'm rebuilding my 5.7 tpi out of a 1989 iroc. The only thing I'm gonna do is bore it 30 over. I was wondering what size cam to use without having to mod the computer. Thanks for any help

Re: tpi cam help

Comp cams 08-302-8 looks like it would be okay in an otherwise stock TPI. It adds a slight bit of duration and lift(210/220 @050 .480/.480 112LSA)but it's mild enough to work with your stock heads and intake. The 08-300-8 is milder yet but may not be much of an improvement.

I have built TPI 350s with much larger cams (SLP 224/230 @050 .513/.520 112LSA) using ported OE heads and intake. The only parts that needed to be replaced were the springs. However, if youre not familiar with porting you may be safer to stay clear of it.

Re: tpi cam help

Other cams that work well with an otherwise stock L98 are the Comp 501 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-08-501-8/ and 502 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-08-502-8/ grinds. The 502 will want some more torque converter, so if you're not touching anything else about the car, stick with the 501.

You MUST replace the valve springs and all their associated hardware, with the ones specified by the cam mfr, when upgrading to an aftermarket cam.

Make sure you get a set of 083 castings back when you take them in for a valve job. DO NOT turn them in as cores and just accept whatever they hand you in return, and let them tell you "all 350 heads are the same", because THEY'RE NOT. You'll most likely end up with a pair of junk "swirlies" out of a truck... a SERIOUS downgrade... while your nice 083s end up on their round-track car or something. The trash heads casting # is 191 or 193. Total garbage.
