Help with Comp xr288
I recently installed the Comp xr288hr-10 part # 08-433-8 cam in my motor.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-08-433-8/
From what I understand this Cam in ground from a austempered steel core. My question is can I run a stock distributor gear and fuel pump rod or do I need a melonized gear and bronze tip fuel pump rod.
I e-mailed comp this question and also called their 800#. The tech on the phone told me that it was fine to run stock parts since it was austempered. A few days later I got back this e-mail.
This cam requires a steel/iron mealonized distributor gear. It must me a
mealonized gear. For a fuel pump pushrod you will either need a roller or
bronze tip style.

So what do you guys think? What are your experiences with this line of cams? I know that the factory cams and billet cams require the melalonized gear, but I think they are ground from a billet core.
I also found this on comps web site

Re: Help with Comp xr288
For what it's worth, your cam and the one I am currently using (XR276HR) are from the same page in the Comp catalouge with the same footnotes.
I was told that the OEM ditributor gear can be used and I have been doing just that for tens of thousands of miles. I also use the OEM fuel pump push rod. There IS a note regarding the need for a bronze tipped push rod should a high performance, six valve style mechanical fuel pump be used.
I came across an old thread of my own more or less asking the same question. Read post #7.

Re: Help with Comp xr288
Just a thought, when they refer to the stock gear, are they assuming it was a distributor from a roller block. I have an old hei that was used with a flat tappet setup, as was the fuel pump pushrod.
I just got the motor running and it runs fine, I just don't want any problems down the road.
