Re: squeaky speedometer
You have to pull the cluster to lube or replace the speedo cable.

Re: squeaky speedometer
thanks guys, can i remove just the lower dash panel to get to the clip that attaches the cable to the head ? and is there anything i can lube it as a spray instead of taking the cable out of the sleeve and wrestling it back together?
Is this usually the cable or the head that needs lubed?

The housing/cable, for best effect, needs to be cleaned and relubed (your car is nearly 30 years old. How many revolutions has the cable make in those years?).
Cable.

Re: squeaky speedometer
Hey gang-
I pulled my speedo and fixed the trip odo. I want to lube the cable before i put it all back together. I have an 89- aparently with a two piece cable. I pulled the cable out from the dash and it is only about 3 feet long.
Question is- do I just simply take the cable housing loose form the trans and pull the bottom part of the cable out that way?
Anything that is going to get me in trouble?
thanks!

Re: squeaky speedometer
thanks JamesC- I am going to head out to the garage...just gotta go get some cable lube.
Why do you and others say only lube the bottom 2/3s of the cable?
Will the lube travel up the cable and end up dripping from behind the speedo? Just curious.

Re: squeaky speedometer
Got the two piece cable assembly out of the car. The cable will not come out of the lower casing section. Anyone ever been able to get this out? No visual camage to the casing. Cable spins freely. Seems like it is designed to not come apart. Wondering how I am going to get that lower section cleaned and re-lubed adequately.
I guess like JamesC said...I could always replace with a one piece.
Suggestions on where to buy?
thanks!
