89 rs 350 sbc need air cleaner thats fits
My brothers oldest son has a 89 camaro rs with a vortec 350 in her. the engine has a wiend intake stealth i think and a 600 eddy carb. right now he is running the infamous edelbrock triagular foam air cleaner thing... you guys know the one , the one that melts if you engine backfires, well can you guys give me some air cleaners that will fit under his stock hood, i was thinking the low profile eddey 14" open element, any ideas ?

You are talking about the triangle of death. I always wince a bit when ever I see one of those on a motor, saw one just today at a cruise in.
It's going to be a tight fit any way you go because that intake is kinda tall, it's taller then the performer RPM I use and I had to use a drop base cleaner and remove the hood insulation.
Hopefully someone who's tried that combo will know exactly what you need but I'd say at least a 1-1/2 to 2 inch drop will be needed. A good way to check is the pudy trick. Put a tall piece on the carb (not some where it will fall in obviously) with out the cleaner on and close the hood and see how tall it is when smashed down by the hood. That will let you know how much clearance you have to work with.

Years ago I had clearance problems and used a 14" drop base air cleaner and a filter that was slightly less than 2" high.

I had a drop-base 14in job that fit, but it also rubbed a wire on the distributor, and in order to use it you have to add a 1/2 in spacer on top of the carb to clear the linkage - the palstic spacers always broke from the heat, and would never sit correctly allowing for a gap. Even with all this, I had to run a 2in element to fit under the hood with my Performer RPM intake and Edelbrock 1406 carb. I looked in there one day just to see - it's amazing the engine got any air at all - there was barely 3/4 in clearance inside the housing for air to go into the carb!
I swapped out for a 9in open element from Spectre - it sells on the shelf with a 2in element from Autozone for $29. I get a FULL 2in of clearance inside for airflow, no plastic spacer required to clear linkages, and it comes with a rechargeable filter. The only mod I did was run a long bolt thru a block of wood, through the housing, and I put the nut on, and tightened it down until the slight upward center of the lid was now level. I'm assuming that in the old days, they always had a raised center on the air cleaner lid to make sure any water never drained into the carb. But today, no real need - especially on a 3rd gen where the hood sits right on top of the cleaner anyways - there's no room for water to get in there UNLESS you have a hole in your hood RIGHT THERE.

Sorry - maybe I confused you. There is NO wood spacer. I just used a piece of wood and the long bolt to bend the top of the air cleaner to be flat instead of raised. It was just a piece of 2x4 that I drilled a hole in.
See, all the air cleaner lids that I've ever seens are made in such a way that the center of the tops are pointed up - like a circus tent. I'm assuming this was to keep rain water from collecting in the center of a flat lid, and thus dripping down into the carb.
Everytime I had an issue with an air cleaner lid, it was because the top was pointed and hit the hood. On this one, I decided to make the top flat. Using the wood and a bolt and tightening it utilized even pressure and bent the top to flat evenly, and with no damage (as opposed to hitting it with a hammer to bend it down).
This is basically the one I mentioned: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SPE-4770/?rtype=10
The one on the shelf at Autozone is $12 more, but it comes with a rechargeable filter rather than the paper filter than Summit ships with theirs.

I have the same setup as your son, 350 Vortec with Weiand Stealth and 650 Holley carb. I found a Holley drop base 14" air cleaner at Advance, trimmed out some of the inner hood skeleton (Not sure if it was entirely necessary) and it fit like a dream. Stock Z28 hood. Good luck!
