It should have a 195 thermostat, and what the gauge reads depends on who made it. If it's original Pontiac, it's way off. If it's modern Auto Meter or similar, no need to worry until it hits 120. If you're gonna play with the stat, a 180 would help power but hurt mpg and engine wear. Either way, drill a small steam hole in the stat.

Mine runs about 175 w/o AC and about 200 with AC. It has a 180 stat and a manual switch for the fan.

The 195 stat is what it calls for. 220+ is what GM intended these cars to run at, which most people think is way too hot. If factory, our fans don't even kick on until I believe 228? I wouldn't be concerned unless you get over 240+

Re: What is my 1985 trans ams running temp
GM designed these cars to run hot! 220 Degrees F. Too hot, at these temps, you loose power much needed in these cars, and engine life. I put in a 180 thermostat and a 200 degree on, 185 degree off thermal fan switch) WOW what a difference in power!
GM made them run hot for emissions, and it just makes them run terrible, and sluggish. Take my advice and the cheapest way to power is that thermal switch and a thermostat, all together run you less than $100 bucks. I promise you WILL be happy.
Hope this helps!
