Timing ? And Oil smoke ?

I have a 86 iroc 305 tpi 117k original. Did a complete tune up ( minus timing ) and she runs hot at times , so hot that items ( oil dipstick, tanny dipstick, coolant overflow, etc...) are untouchable. Weird..... what could be causing this??? also ( not sure if the person who told me this is right ) on some start ups she will blow oil smoke out tailpipe, i was told cleaning the " tubes" that go from the valve train down to crankcase need to be cleaned. Told me cleaning the sludge out will stop that problem, is this true?? If not then what could be causing this?

are you saying it gets way too hot while your driving? a little smoke on start up sounds like valve seals to me. not sure about the tubes and wheather cleaning them out will help.

No not so much while im driving. If its hot out then it will run around 240 ( way too hot ) but if its cool out it will run around 180 driving and climbs to about 230 sitting. If i sit and light up my tires ( engine turning 4000 4500) it will climb to 250-260 in a min or two.

Sounds like you don't have a fun or its working right. The smoke probably coming from bad valve seats. Check and see if your fan is coming on if not hook the fun up to the battery and see if it turns on it not then the fun is bad needs to be replace or it could just be the relay.

your right that is way too hot...timing could be the problem and is easiest to check. have you had the radiator flushed? ive had problems after doing so, ended up buying a new/used radiator. im sure you have checked the belts at the pump so it almost has to be a clogged radiator or timing. a water pump that goes out will usualy be obvious. sorry about the spelling, hope that helps

Yes, just bought a new 3 row rad, belts are new. On a prev post someone said about timimng so I was just wondering if it was something to look into. Whats so odd is when it gets really hot everything under my hood i cant touch w/o gloves!!!! Also, i thought it was my valve seals, the " tube " theroy was kinda odd to me.

Re: Timing ? And Oil smoke ?

Have you change your thermostat? You say its fine when your driving but sitting at a light it will over heat. When your driving you get air flow into your radiator but when your sitting at the light if your fan not blowing air through your radiator it will over heat. If you change your fan make sure it blowing air the right way. You want air blowing toward the motor so if it in front of the radiator you want the air blowing through the radiator, or if you got a fan behind the radiator you want the air blowing towards the motor.
