Thinking of purchasing this but
I want to purchase this:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-SK12-242-2/
but want to know if itll require any type of machine work to my lo5 swirlports (I know).
I have the money for the cam but no money for any type of machine work.
Also is this a good choice in cam for a car that'll see mostly street, and a little strip. looking for around 300-400hp with no power adder

Re: Thinking of purchasing this but
I run the same cam. My heads were already machined for bigger valves and .550" valve lift clearance when I got them though. I think that cam is as big as youll be able to go using stock ratio rocker arms without having to machine the heads for more lift. You will however have to change the valve springs and rocker arms. I just so happen to have a spare set of the comp cams springs you need for that cam taking up space in my closet. Its the full set of springs, steel retainers, and steel valve locks. They were used for about 1000 miles on a friends engine before he blew it up, but they are in perfect shape.

that is an awesome street cam. But if your car is still EFI, it will not work. carb only

Why only carb'd? the comp website offers variations, one for carb, tbi, tpi, bigger engines, smaller engines, I got the one for 350 tbi.

Re: Thinking of purchasing this but
another thing, with a cam like that its better to run a lower gear ratio. 3.42 at a minimum. 3.73s would be better. and a higher stall converter like a 2,400

I would need a computer controlled cam correct?
I checked the website again and they only have the one in the link, a tpi version, and one for big block.
Here is the selection... will any of these fit my car? I need to keep it tbi because california emissions

efi engines need a lobe seperation like a 112 -114. they dont anything tighter like a 108 or 110.

Re: Thinking of purchasing this but
I currently have the engine out of the car. It is a stock lo5 with the basic swirlports.
My mod after a good cam is vortec heads.
I want to keep it a smog legal as I could. what I mean is sniffer legal, visual doesnt really matter.
I want to do hooker 2055's > 2055 y-pipe > cutout before cat > stock exhaust.
I want my car to be a semi daily driver, but also a strip beast.
Im looking for about 300 mid-high range hp.
I'm not to good with chevy performance yet but I know how to work on an engine.

Re: Thinking of purchasing this but
That cam has a lift of .480". If I'm not mistaken, the stock heads can handle about .460" of lift, anything over that and you gotta machine the guides to handle more lift.

Re: Thinking of purchasing this but
more then likely 9.5:1 or 10.0:1. If I go with 9.5:1 I would want to build the car to be able to handle a power adder, more then likely a supercharger. But I dont have that kind of budget so I may just go with higher compression

Re: Thinking of purchasing this but
Well I found this and post #3 is saying that .480" of lift is the max you can safely do on stock swirl ports.

Re: Thinking of purchasing this but
if you go close to 10.0 with that cam, Vortec heads, and a good int manifold, you should be close to 400 hp. i think you'll be really happy with it. there's mods you must do to the tbi unit to support that kind of power. that tbi is your biggest restriction. check out the tbi section, there's tons of info there on what to do.

Oh Ya I know that article front and back... That'll definitely be my next mod.
As for the engine. I believe a rebuild is in order.. I dont think I can survive on stock 8.3:1 compression

Re: Thinking of purchasing this but
the vortec heads with that cam is whats goin to make the difference. they should work together nicely. your not going to be able to take advantage of that cam with those stock tbi heads. if your on a really tight budget and you have to run them, id pick a little smaller cam.

Re: Thinking of purchasing this but
I just read an article where a guy upgraded his cam ad rockers, giving him a max lift of .488. Everyone said he should have no problems with that much lift. I think Ill be fine. Im not giving up on vortecs, I just cant afford it
