Re: starter options

You could try a mini starter. Personally I don't have any experience with them (yet) other than having an LT1 mini starter installed on my 305 (haven't gotten as far as to fire it up yet). A lot of people say the mini starter has enough clearance to the exhaust to not even need a heat shield. Not sure if it's true or not, by mine has some pretty good clearance to my hooker headers (2055). I bought mine off of eBay. There is a company there that manufacturers reproduction LT1 mini starters, and it only costs half of what the cheapest mini starter does from summit. Or if you're still adamant on keeping the autozone starter you could invest in a proper multi-layered heat shield.
Hope that helps.

I've never heard of a starter with a remote solenoid. But, you can convert a starter to remote solenoid. I just wouldn't recommend it with a permanent magnet motor starter.

Re: starter options

This is what I used http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-G1750/ . It's fairly easy to install, click on the "instructions" link on Summit's page for details (you won't have an "R" wire). I didn't have to lengthen the factory wires, just unclamped them from the bell housing clamp and routed them to the fender liner where I mounted the remote solenoid.

I've got coated Hooker headers, but I don't think a shield will help much if you're using a remote solenoid.
