87 Trans Am questions thread

Several years ago my dad and I would go over to his buddies house. The man had a junkyard and in that junkyard sat an 87 Trans Am. I tried to buy it from him several times but he wouldn't sell it and I eventually just let it go.

6 years later I went to get some parts for a Monte Carlo and the car was still sitting in the exact same spot it had been in all those years ago. I asked him how much he would sell it for and it was pretty cheap so I bought it and towed it home. He said that the PO of the car had been having distributor problems and could never sort them out and that after he had gotten the car from that guy he had just never cared to bother with it

So I got it home and cleaned it up a bit and threw a vacuum dizzy from accel that I had laying around in it and replaced all the cut plug wires. I have no idea why they were cut but they were. After messing with the timing I finally got her started. She ran damn good but before I could move her out of her spot the water pump went out so I replaced that and did a tune up on it. Its now my DD.

Which is where the questions come in. Its a computer controlled carb 305 with an automatic tranny. It idles high when in park or neutral but idles fine in drive or any other gear. When I shift from park or neutral into a gear it lurches quite a bit which drives me insane. What could the problem be here?
Cruise control won't work either. You can feel it try and grab but it just doesn't seem to want to work correctly. I think this may be a vacuum problem since the previous owner pulled and switched around a bunch of liens so if someone has a thread link or a diagram for that I'd appreciate it.

I'm also pulling a code 12. Thats the only code I'm pulling which I know is usually a diagnostic code but I also know that it has to do with the distributor which is now a vacuum dizzy instead of a CC one. I'll probably put the stock one back in at some point and see if it works.

I have a friend with a 383 for sale and I have a T56 6 speed in the garage..I just don't know if its going in this or my Camaro yet. Decisions decisions.

So if anyone has any advice or anything that could help please let me know! Thanks!

Re: 87 Trans Am questions thread

I really don't understand why none of my threads EVER get commented on.

Anyways. I got started on the interior at about 6 oclock last night. I pulled the carpet out only to be swarmed by a huge army of ants. I've found 3 holes in the floor pans of the car, they really aren't as bad as I thought they'd be.

I'm going to cut the pans out of my donor car today. It shouldn't be too difficult to get a bit done, then I'm going to put dynomat or some type of sound deadener all throughout the car. I'm going to go to lowes or home depot to find some.
Here is the donor car. Its in pretty good shape itself but its a base model 2.8 sooooo

As you can see the interior is nice. It also has a spoiler

Re: 87 Trans Am questions thread

When you get no posts, it's usually because either no one has the info you asked for, or they got confused by the way you asked. I read your original post several days ago, but I didn't see any help I could offer. Help with dTCs, like your code 12, is best handled in the fuel-system-specific sub-forums. so f you have TPI, go to the TPI sub-forum and ask those guys.
By the way, that's the first time I've ever seen a Rorshach ink blot thing like shrinks use, on the hood of a car. I'd clear-coat over it to preserve it.
Another thing to consider, your V6 car probably has a better axle ratio than your Trans Am, you may want to do a swap.

Computer carb and Accel distributor are not compatible. You need to either fix what was wrong with the original distributor (ignition module and coil are pretty common fail points), or find another CC distributor.

Re: 87 Trans Am questions thread

Yeah I know they aren't compatible I'm gonna change it back as soon as I'm done with the interior and paint. I got the black interior from the donor car tonight, unfortunately the passenger side floor pan was completely gone, but luckily the drivers side is mint. Looking at these cars makes me not wanna go tear into my Camaro...
Anyways the donor car is all stripped with the exception of one door, one fender, and the headlights. It'll be hitting the scrapyard soon.
I'm also wondering if the AC stuff out of the 2.8 would work in the trans am? It's all there and I really wouldn't mind having it.
I need to get some sound deadener and I'd like to order some hatch struts as well. Anyone know where to get any? I checked Menards tonight for sound deadener but they didn't have any that sticks...

Re: 87 Trans Am questions thread

you should be able to use all the 2.8 car's a/c stuff, except the compressor bracket, and maybe the compressor itself.
