yes. you can check the casting #s under the valve covers to make sure it has the correct heads.

LG4's and L69's used the same heads, crank, block, rods and intake, with only slight differences to the carb. '82-'84 LG4 used dished pistons, '85-'86 LG4 and the L69's had the same pistons. Biggest differences were the cam, air cleaner, and exhaust, as well as slightly better PROM tuning for the L69.

Re: I Need Help On L69 305 5.0L H.O
In 83 the LG4 low output used dished pistons yielding an 8.5:1 compression ratio. All L69s used flattops for a 9.5:1 compression ratio. Cam was different, as stated above, but even the L69 cam was nothing to write home about. An entry level Edlebrock Performer cam or Summit house brand K1102 would perform similarly, if not better. There are cam specs listed in the tech articles of this website if you want specifics on the stock cams.
Intakes and carbs were identical except the L69 used DR secondary rods vs. the LG4's CH rods. Distributor identical, pretty much everything identical. Exhaust was different from the manifolds back, though. 2" outlet manifolds for the LG4, 2-1/4" outlet manifolds for the L69. Y-pipe, cat and everything back was bigger on the L69. L69 also had a dual snorkel air cleaner vs. the single on the LG4. I think the fans were different as well, but I can't recall exactly.
In 83 the L69 had a knock sensor system while the LG4 did not. Also the chip tuning (mainly the saprk advance curve) was more aggressive in the L69.
That's pretty much everything I can think of off the top of my head.

'86-'87 LG4 had electric radiator fan, as well as all L69's. '85-'87 LG4's and all L69's had the knock sensor. As stated, some LG4's had different pistons than L69's, but not all.
You can take an '85-up LG4 shortblock and make it every bit the same as an L69. You can take any 305 shortblock, and with flat top pistons, make it the same as an L69.
In California, you'd be best advised to use a block of '83 vintage or later (same year as your chassis or later).
Of course, if you found a 350 shortblock, and didn't say anything to anyone about it. . .

Yes, you can use a later block, but be careful - you are limited to carb models (if they happen to check casting #'s).
What you can do with a 350: Put your 305 stuff on it. Go faster. (And lay lower at smog time.)

Re: I Need Help On L69 305 5.0L H.O
when he says put your 305 stuff on it he means your heads on the short block. Naturally it will have bigger pistons as bore size is the difference between a 350 and 305.

A shortblock has crank, rods, pistons, sometimes cam/timing set, but never heads. A longblock typically has the above plus cam, lifters, pushrods, heads, valves, rockers arms (and sometimes oil pan, oil pump, and timing cover).

Definitely do the 350. If you're going to put 305 heads on it, you'll need to stick with dished pistons, not flat-tops with valve reliefs. Valve reliefs don't count as a dish, though they do affect compression. Just not enough. Choose your heads and pistons, then we can discuss cams.

Any 305 block will do.
The original L69 cam specs are 202/207-114.5 at 115 .404/.415. Several companies offer replacements with those specs, including Elgin.

What exactly are you trying to achieve? If you want it to perform like an L69 all the parts are out there to make a 5.0 to L69 specs. If you want it to look like an original HO engine you will need the dual snorkel air cleaner and fresh air plumbing hoses.

There are no clues on the engine itself (with the possible exception of the VIN stamped on it). What is on the engine, as Hank points out, is somewhat of a hint. But, that doesn't tell you if someone put such an air cleaner on their non-HO car (like I did).
Yes, it would be nice to know why you're asking. As it is, we can keep going back to get another rock for you for a long, long time, but if we knew why you were asking, we could probably get you the rock you're looking for right away.

Which brings us back to the fact that you can make a 350 look like the L69, for the same money, so why not?

With 305 heads on a 350, I'd suggest a COMP 12-210-2, but you might need a custom chip to go with it. This cam is mild enough to pass emissions up to '86, and has a Calif. E.O. number.

Re: I Need Help On L69 305 5.0L H.O
If you don't like the way it idles after you get the cam in there, or if the computer throws a code, you'll need to find someone who can help you with the tuning. In the old days, we tuned with a distributor wrench and a screwdriver, but these days we tune with the chip in the computer. Maybe you knew that much. Anyway, that cam is enough to make a difference worth swapping it in for, but mild enough to be a safe choice.
I don't know any more about it, I'm good with parts combinations, not electronics. But I know to ask five7kid who he thinks could help. He's a big fan of the computer-controlled QJet.

And If you want your engine to look better, a little chrome never hurt anybody haha, get yourself some chrome valve covers, maybe clean up your intake a little bit or throw a different one on. And BAM looks 100 times better, did that to my 305, and maybe throw some headers on there, IMO the chrome shorty headers look the best, so your engine will look better and have a little more kick to it.
