Re: removing egr totally?

One thing you may be in for is problems getting through emissions, that is, if you have to get the car sniffed. If you don't have to have it sniffed and only have a visual inspection, that could be a problem too. Depends on how close they check.

i heard somewhere that PA just picked up cali's emissions laws so you would definitely be in trouble if that's the case.

Re: removing egr totally?

Just keep the egr for when you have to get it inspected. You're check engine light will be on without it though.

Re: removing egr totally?

I live in Alberta and am deleting my smog and egr in a few weeks. A bud of mine removed his egr and saw no difference whatsoever in gas mileage.
Plus the egr temp sensor is now discountinued and the valve isn't too cheap either. So if you do not need it and your swapping your intake (like me), may as well buy a block off kit and be done with it. And if your home gets emission laws then you can always throw it back in..
Just my 2 cents

ya that's what like I had in mind, with mine im just making my own block off plate with the same manifold and adding some nitrous, and ya always a good idea to have a few spare stock items i did the same with my air conditioning but still haven't managed 2 get the semi large condenser? off the front right next to the radiator

are you talking about all this stuff and the hoses and pipes that goes with it?

Because if so i was wondering the same thing, and how hard would it be to do?

Re: removing egr totally?

Those are all part of the a.i.r injection. They pump fresh air into your car when it is cold. You can remove the smog pump (below the ac pump), the diverter valve (the big thing with ears), all those hoses and remove the air tubes on your manifolds and plug them with a 1/4" npt plug I believe, and remove the hose from the cat as well.

Be sure to keep in mind that an exhaust shop wont touch it if they don't see the air line going into the cat(s). Unless they're cool with it.

My exhaust guy tacked that on to my cat to make it look functional. I also want to know what would happen if I got rid of my EGR, I'm considering putting Vortec heads, and an intake. It does still have to be e-tested, aswell.

Re: removing egr totally?

Just run egr. I'm ridding mine, because the components are all 22 years old, and when it dies I dont want to have to be faced with a decision then. So i'm doing it now.
If you install the headers yourself and bring the car in to get the cat cut out and a 3" ypipe and a cutout installed, they will have no problem with that.
Especially in non-emissions alberta

Re: removing egr totally?

in live in Pa as well and before you go taking anything off make sure you have a person to inspect it for you without all the emissions stuff being there some guys are fine with it not being there some aren't it would really suck to take it out and have to put it back on for inspection.

Re: removing egr totally?

so then am i the only one whose car wont start without the egr valve? I was changing my valve covers and forgot to put it back on when i tried to start it. it wouldn't even start. I was also told by a shop that if i dont have the egr valve plugged in it can really mess up the engine in the long run....but thats just what they told me.

spiffies that's what i've heard too that if it's not hooked up right or not removed right you cause more harm than good.

Re: removing egr totally?

ya that's what I was really going for a lot more space, less to worry about as in reparing egr or even having to mess with it, hey I also took out almost all my air conditioning but the smaller radiator ran by the AC looks like it wants to stay and seems like if I want to get it out im going to have to remove the radiator?

Re: removing egr totally?

I have an 89 RS 305 Tbi and replaced the EGR valve to get the stupid check engine light off, and now it feels like it is hesitating at highway speeds. It was running fine before I changed it. Can I just block it off? I can live with the S.E.S light to have it running smooth again.

Re: removing egr totally?

I saw your response on EGR and noticed you have the same engine as me. I recently changed it to get the S.E.S. light off and now it's not running smooth at highway speeds. You blocked it off and it's running fine?
