my new 414 motor build

so all my parts came in for my new motor its going to be a 414 small block.
here is a list of my parts.

Lunati forged 6" connecting rods
rpm forged crank DG3-187 4" stroke
prw 153 fly wheel
6" prw balancer for internal balanced
probe pistions
350 4 bolt main block that has been cnc machined and bored 60 and thickness tested.
clearenced block for rods didn't take a hole lot off, only one thin spot where we went through 1/8" hole filled it in with some devcon.
will update as i get more done.

bottom end all done, oil pump preasure set, aluminum heads are being ported to match intake, center springs are getting changed out for ones with more preasure for solid roller cam, rev kit is on order for the howard lifters.

Re: my new 414 motor build

Interesting. I'm curious how they internally balance a 4" stroke engine. I don't see heavy metal inserts in the crank.
What cam are you running with it to miss the rods?

Re: my new 414 motor build

i forgot what brand the rods where, they are made for a 4" stroke crank to clear every thing, we had to take a bit off number 5 rod bolt head as it was a tight fit, the cam is a custom ground the guy that ordered it hasn't gave me any spec's on it yet all i know is it has 610 of lift. as for balancing the total weight was someething around 1684kg didn't look like they had to add any weight might of taken some off. i'll figure out more when i talk to the guy that ordered every thing

Nice build! What heads are you running. I would test fit the dipstick before you put the pan on. Ask me how I know. My crank scarper and Windage tray work great though.

Re: my new 414 motor build

i didn't even think about that, will try it tomorrow, the heads that i am using are a set of procomp aluminum heads 210 intake runners, being ported and all cleaned up, new springs for 610 lift solid roller cam. 2.02 and 1.60 valves.

Was it a Bauer racing cam?

Looks like an interesting build. Should be a strong motor. Most dont like the idea of 4" stroke in a 350 block but it looks like it works if you pay attention to what you are doing

Re: my new 414 motor build

yes i think it will be a really strong peice and make my 84 camaro fly down the track. i also plan on hitting it with a 300 shot of nitros,

at the moment i don't know a lot on cam all i know is its a custom ground comp cam, made to run on nitros. as for fitment it was really easy very little had to be taken off block to clear rods, this was my first stroker motor that i have built but had help from a local engine builder that does a lot of strokers that arn't just 383. he is working on a 427 from a 350 block and is also looking at doing a 500 ci small block ls motor.

Re: my new 414 motor build

so little update here, motor was droped in to car start of summer, missed first races at local track, but made it out to the second one, car ran strong all day ran a best time of 7.632 in the 1/8 1.817 60 foot, and 93.36 mph, had trackion problems all day spun a good 1/4 track if not more. before the third races i changed out my 3:27 gears for a set of 3:70 and put on a 29x11 slick, and ran 5 gallons 110 race fuel mixed with 5 gallons 94 premium fuel, ran a 7.508, 1.803 60 foot, 94.14 mph, still had traction problems.

last week i was toying around with a mustang in town toe taping and stuff next to him then honked on it and motor started to pop out carb so i pulled over and pulled a valve cover to find one of my rockers laying on it side because of a broken stud stupid 3/8 studs and a broken outer valve spring so now its sitting in the drive way till i find a new spring and a stud, no other damage, lifter still good because of rev kit keeping it in.

so now i'm looking at a new set of heads, a set of aluminum brodix 18 degree heads don't know all the specs but are cnc ported, shaft mount rockers, bigger valves. question is what are my procomp heads with harland sharp roller rocker worth and what are the brodix worth used

Re: my new 414 motor build

new heads are on motor, they are an set of brodix spx -11 that have been rolledover to 18 degree, ported by kenny weld, 1 7/8 huster headers. new moroso oil pan installed to clear headers, hoping to make 600hp, will find out in a few weeks wheni haul it to a dyno.

Lest we forget... the Ford Cleveland 400 used a 4" bore and a 4" stroke.
Fortunately for us Chevy guys it was put in land barges and only topped with a 2 barrel carb and the other guys were busy putting the heads off of them on 351's and lowering their compression ratio to about 7:1 in the process.
The 400 Cleveland could launch the crap out of a full size LTD though...(and that ain't no easy task) The hot rod version of this motor was found under the hood of many a State Trooper Interceptor chasing our asses, back in the day...
(I miss the 70's and the smell of half-burned 100 octane leaded gas)
Back on topic; not a thing wrong with that build, and I love the headers.

Re: my new 414 motor build

That motor is nothing like a 350 sbc block with 4" stroke. That cleveland has a 10.297" deck height while a sbc is 9.025" When you get into 4" strokes on factory 350 blocks, you are left with a piston that has very little compression height distance which leads to lack of room for oil rings/piston rings. You can get decent room with a short rod but then your rod/stroke ratio sucks. And it takes alot of clearancing on the block to clear those long swing arms of the crank, not to mention lack of cam to rod clearance...This means small base circle with limited lift/duration because valve control becomes an issue with super small base circles and factory lifters. Just a few issues to worry about, its not a bore/stroke issue. But, there are guys doing it with success.
