Roller Rockers really necessary?

Besides the $200-300 price tag, is there really anything that special about full roller or roller tip rockers on a street motor?

From what I see, you don't really get much more than the added cost and added hassle of getting the correct pushrod length.

I'm building up a factory 305 short block with Trickflow 175cc 305 heads and a .480/.487 lift cam. Would I be better served with a stamped rocker arm, roller tip, or full roller?

Thanks for the input guys, once again trying to sort through all the tall tales, manufacturers claims, and magazine hype.

Re: Roller Rockers really necessary?

For a street motor? Not really. Switching to a roller rocker means you'll have identical rocker ratios on each rocker. Factory stamped steel rockers have a wide tolerance in ratios. A roller tip rocker reduces some friction off the top of the valve and reduces some of the side load put on the valve. A full roller rocker reduces a lot more friction. Going to a much higher than stock lift usually requires some sort of rocker swap. The slot cut in a stamped steel rocker only has limited clearance. If lift is too great, the rocker will hit the pedestal at full lift. Long slot rockers can be used if roller rockers are too expensive or in some racing classes, not allowed.

Re: Roller Rockers really necessary?

My take on this is since you're obviously making performance mods, if your budget can handle it, you're better off with full roller rockers.

They offer several advantages over "ball and sled" rockers it's hard to not use them. One of the cardinal rules is not to skimp on valve train parts.

I recommend you move to 7/16" studs (for better rigidity) and 7/16" Non-Self Aligning rocker arms. Since you're going to need new springs in order to get the full benefit from thre new cam, you're only looking at $225 or so for the rockers and maybe $50-$75 (maybe less) for the screw in studs.

Just my views.

He isn't anywhere near the spring pressures required to use 7/16" stud rockers. With press in studs, there's a lot more to changing the studs. If you need to go through all the effort of having the stud bosses machined down, it would be better to just buy aftermarket heads with the work already done to them.

Re: Roller Rockers really necessary?

That's good advice and info from AlkyIROC.
Unless you're trying to squeeze out the last 5 hp from your build, the factory stamped rockers are perfectly adequate for a .48X lift cam and the required springs.
