Changing Gas Tank and Fuel Sending Unit

Changing Gas Tank and Fuel Sending Unit
Looking for some advice to change out the current Gas Tank in my 1985 Trans Am 5.0 Liter 305. Now 24 years old.
My concern is what does the Tank Inside look like inside ??? Is it rusting or rotting out from the inside ??? I have addresed all aspects of the car except the Fuel Tank. I do not have any issues that I am aware with them.
I do have a New GM Gas Tank with Straps that I bought some time ago, but the Fuel Sending unit I could not get from GM. The concern here is, if the Gas Tank is removed and the sending unit is in bad shape, I will be in major trouble since I do not have another.
Does anyone know who makes or where I can get a Gas Tank Sending Unit for an 1985 Trans Am ????
Anyone who has tackled this issue, let me know how you worked it out.
Thanks
Rob

Re: Changing Gas Tank and Fuel Sending Unit
I have a sending unit that came out of my 85 TA. I converted from the carb sending unit to the EFI unit.
Here is a picture. It worked perfectly as far a fuel level and the sock is perfect.

Re: Changing Gas Tank and Fuel Sending Unit
So you made an Refill sending unit into a Carb sending unit? I thought the tanks were different between Refill and carbureted. Do you think I could make a efi fuel sending unit into a Carb fuel sending unit or is it even possible?

Re: Changing Gas Tank and Fuel Sending Unit
I simply replaced the carbed unit with the EFI one. Here is a picture of them side by side. The tanks are the same. The later EFI tanks had a plastic tray in them to hold the fuel around the pickup. But if you had an 85 TPI car it had the exact same tank as the carbed version. Just the different sending unit was used. I'm sure you could convert an EFI unit to work with a carb. Even the plug is the same where it goes into the car

Re: Changing Gas Tank and Fuel Sending Unit
I am thinking maybe I need to to do this with my 1984 L69 T/A. Did you experience any fuel boiling or vapor lock issues?

I know this is old but I just came across it, I’m in the same situation with my 84 t/a are you saying a sending unit off a tune port will drop in and work with a carb ?
