engine teardown, what to look for?
Just pulled the engine a couple of nights ago and am hoping to start tearing down the 305 as soon as I get an engine stand. The engine has about 120k on it and a suspected blown head gasket. What other kinds of things should I be looking out for?
The plan as of right now is to tear it down, clean it up, and put a new gasket set in it. Don't really have money for any upgrades, I am going to get headers, remove the AC and A.I.R system. But other than that just want to clean it up and get it back on the road.
Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Just gaskets- not rings and bearings? Clean old gasket residue completely. I like to clean with acetone or laquer thinner. If you use this stuff, DO NOT GET IT IN THE ENGINE unless you are doing a cmplete rebuild. Don't gouge any surfaces. Use a scraper NOT a screwdriver when you can. If you know someone who works in a shop, ask them if they would clean the heads. And have fuunn!

Re: engine teardown, what to look for?
I'm trying to keep costs as low as possible, so I'm hoping to not touch the bottom end.
I was about to pull the heads off tonight, but after removing the pushrods and head bolts I couldn't get the head off. Anybody have a hint about getting the heads off? I put the handle of a breaker bar in the exhaust port and tried to lift up but to no avail.
Any tips would be appreciated!

If you are absolutely sure that you have removed all 17 bolts from the head, then you'll have to pry harder. You can try beating on the head with a rubber mallet.

Check for bolts in the corners where oil tends to pool. It may be possible to overlook them because of the oil. My own experience is to smack the head on the intake side and pry from the exaust side--careful not to damage the valves! (( It would be a good idea to have someone help--they can help eye the head if it comes up so you can move to the other end--also to help handle them if they lift and you're off balance)) They're not very heavy but just to be safe! A dropped head can't be too much fun!!

Re: engine teardown, what to look for?
I got them off by hitting a piece of 4x4 with a two pound hammer.
I got the engine down to the shortblock and found that I need a new timing chain. Other than that I don't even know what to look for, so if anybody has any other input as far as what to do next, I'm all ears!
thanks!

Look for any gouges in the cylinders to show the ring are still sealing and maybe clean the carbon off the top of the pistons
