Dropped bolt in dizzy hole...

Woe is me....

I have a part retriever, ie, a magnet on a stick that bends as necessary... but I cant fish it out... I dont think it's in the lifter valley... I think it fell down near the oil pump. This is a fresh build... and I REALLy dont want to pull everything back apart to remove it.

Is it probably in the oil pan? It's a pretty big bolt... (was sitting on the firewall lip and the drill cord knocked it in there as I was going to prime the oil pump)

I know it wont get sucked into the oil pump... but I dont know what else it could get into down there. The oil pump has a screen so it's not like it's gonna get sucked into a bearing or whatever. But I am worried about it getting caught up on the corner of a rod or something if the oil is that turbulent as teh car is running.

If it need sto come out, it will come out, but Im thinking it may just be fine the way it is.

Re: Dropped bolt in dizzy hole...

i would pull the dizzy out and intake off and check because you dont want something to get bad then your motor blows.

Re: Dropped bolt in dizzy hole...

definatly pull the pan and fish it out, who know what carnage it may cause. this way if it is not in the pan, you know you'll have to pull the intake to get it out of the lifter valley.

I have half a head bolt in my oil pan. It's been there for over a year. Where's it going to go? Unless I flip it... :-)

Re: Dropped bolt in dizzy hole...

If its already in the car you could probably pull the timing cover and fish out with a flexible magnet, and to put the timing cover back on w/o pulling the oil pan you can cut the top two ends of the timing cover to oil pan lip on a angle and just silicone it, ive done this before and no it wont damage anything nor will it leak.

Re: Dropped bolt in dizzy hole...

For real, that happened to me. I dropped it and it fell really close to the top. I thought a mag would be a great idea, unfortunately for me it only made it fall further. You can hope it went straight down. use that magnet and drag it along the bottom of the pan and if it's down there you should hear it moving along with the mag.

Re: Dropped bolt in dizzy hole...

So lets get your choices straight.

You dropped a bolt down the dizzy hole? At least you know its down there.

Your choices are to:

A) Forget about it and start the engine, possibly destroying your brand new engine.

or

B) Remove the intake, see if can find the bolt, and possibly pull the pan to get at the bolt.

I think you know what needs to be done. Though I'd be pissed at myself too. But its gotta be done.

Re: Dropped bolt in dizzy hole...

Pull the pan a bolt in the oil is not a good idea. You'll end up having to drop the pain later and rebuild the motor.

Re: Dropped bolt in dizzy hole...

It's a pita to pull the pain, but I thought it was worth it. I would still suggest trying to feel if a bolt is even there with a magnet before pulling the pan off. When i dropped a bolt down there, it didn't drop all the way down until I tried to pull it up. maybe check with a light and see that it isn't just sitting right up there. pulling the intake is way easier than the pan. if it went past the top of the block but not all the way down it may be a bummer.

Re: Dropped bolt in dizzy hole...

Yeah I can't see anything down there... I heard it clang around... but I would ahve sworn it went around the bell housing, but I cant find it on the ground anywhere... it's in the motor.

I guess I'll be pulling the pan. It's too dark for me to look right now... but can you get the pan off without removing the motor? I JUST got the exhaust attached and the T56 bolted in and the shifter on it and all that jazz... it JUST got fully put back together again for the first time in probably a year...

Damn.

I'm thinking I can probably walk the magnet up the side of the pan and pull it out that way if I can get about an inch of space between teh pan and the bottom of the block... but I"m worried about whether the rear main seal will be okay after pulling the pan. I dont want oil leaking onto my flywheel after all...

And then I cant hear the bolt scraping around on the bottom of the pan either. I cant see it down the dizzy hole, and I haven't managed to fish it out of the lifter valley anywhere... I'm not sure where else it could be.

Re: Dropped bolt in dizzy hole...

Feel around on top of the bellhousing/transmission. I lost one of the bolts from the back of the heads down there, and thought I had lost it forever in the dirt. When stuff gets up there it's remarkably hard to get it to come back down, I started the engine, revved it, shook the car violently, everything I could think of to move a bolt. I jacked it up, and felt around, and there it was.

Re: Dropped bolt in dizzy hole...

You have to pull the motor up a few inches for that pan to even think about coming off. hen
