Need Help
I'll be driving my car and out of nowhere it will start idling really choppy at about 500 rpms then soon after will go up then the same thing will happen. It sounds like it wants to turn off but it doesn't.
When it idles low and choppy a small amount of smoke comes out the exhaust.
Any ideas?

Re: Need Help
Check the voltage on your Throttle Position sensor, should be around .5 volt if not adjust or replace if necessary. Could be other things, but I would check there first.

Re: Need Help
I have a 89 350 TPI. I just put it in a month ago and did a full tune up on it. Any other suggestions other than the tps?

Re: Need Help
Check the Idle Air Control valve, take it out and clean it, I had this problem w/ TPS and IAC. I have also seen throttle body blade shafts wear out and have slop in them , flopping in the throttle body at idle and work fine w/ pressure on the pedal, check that too.....

Re: Need Help
Also check around on all of your vacuum hoses for any leaks, sensor connectors also (make sure it's all plugged in properly, no wires hanging half out), something could be intermittent, searching sucks but better to check it all out instead of throwing $$$$ at it until it goes away!!! I'll be around keep me posted.....

Re: Need Help
My 89 had the same symptoms turned out to be a bad oil pressure/fuel pump switch. It didn't make any sense back then, but once I replaced the part the problem went away.

Re: Need Help
Oh then that might be the problem for me. Since my oil pressure gage doesn't come on right away when I turn on the car. I'm thinking that might be the problem.
