4 blade spdt window switches

Trying to change window switches to a universal type switch ( i dont have oem ones or a center console) but the oem switches are spdt with 4 terminals (one supplies ground). But all the spdt switches i see only have 3 terminals (no ground). is it supplied through the body of the switch(dont think so cuz even plastic switches only have 3). or are they expecting the load to supply ground?

Re: 4 blade spdt window switches

Not really an engine question is it?

More electrical experts hang out in the ELECTRICAL forum, and switch experts might be found in the interior forum.

I don't know the answer to your question off the top of my head, but I do remember a drawing in the Helm manual explaining how these switches worked.

However as a guess - you only really need the ground wire if you're lighting up the switch. If it's non-illuminated, I don't see why you need a ground wire.

However the way these switches are wired up, it's not as simple as a SPDT, since you're reversing the current flow to the SAME motor, rather than lighting up two different light bulbs or something.

Maybe a nice mod (Five7 kid) will move your post to a more appropriate forum, and if you don't get any answers in a few days PM me and i'll dig up my HELM and give you a schematic.

Sonix is right, this really should be in the electrical forum.

That being said, here is the diagram I have for the window switches.

By definition SPDT switches have 3 terminals.

The Camaro requires DPDT center off.

These normally have 6 terminals, however 2 pairs are jumpered VIA the wiring process.

It’s conceivable a manufacturer can produce a switch with jumpers internal.

That would render 4 terminals.

You might have to get switches from an electronics outlet.

That would open up all kinds of options:

Color LED status indicators, etc.

OR:

You can use SPDT switches and install relays.

Happy Racing!

Re: 4 blade spdt window switches

ITS THE FORUM POLICE(sirens wailing)! i have the service manual thanks for the pic tho. after calling some electrical companies i found that nina is correct and its pretty much impossible to find a 4 terminal dpdt (kudos on the terminology nina) momentary switch. Most "window switches" (spdt)switches assume the load supplies ground, and as you can see from the diagram thats not the case in 3rd gens. itll be easier to just buy some oem switches.
