timing question

I recently did the tbi to carb swap... went with a 650cfm holley double pumper with mechanical secondaries. Now that i have it running, i am not sure what to set the timing at however. first of all, i cannot find the proper timing in the engine compartment, nor do i have the owners manual, but i would assume that the timing would change anyways with a carb setup vs. tbi. The engine is a 305, originally tbi, any timing suggestions? thank you for all of your help

Re: timing question

Are you still using the computer? If you are I bet you SES light is coming on. Without computer the total timing might be somewhere around30 to 35 degrees.

Re: timing question

Try googling 305 build, theres a few done by car magazines that will tell you their timing settings to get you started. GL

Re: timing question

You should be using a vacuum advance distributor... timing should be around 10 with unplugged.. time it for 36 total and see where you are at at idle..

Re: timing question

I am using a VA dizzy... youre saying with the vacuum line disconnected from the distributor, it should be at 10deg? And this may be a stupid question, but how do i measure 36 total? (not sure what you mean by total... or how to measure 36 deg when my timing scale only goes up to 14 deg). Sorry to seem ignorant... first project! Thanks for your help.

Re: timing question

you need a dial back timing light, or a timing tape on your balancer. But 10* will put you somewhat close depending on how much mechanical advance is in your distributor. I have a proform dist. and 12* idle (with vac line disconnected) puts me at 35* total (above 3500rpm or until it stops advancing depending on your springs), which is where my motor likes to run best.

Play around with 10* it will get you in the ballpark at least.
