New owner need help with firing sequence

Hey guys just a quick question with an easy answer I hope. I just bought an 85 camaro 5.0 V8 with the following:

HEI cap
650 Holley carb
Edlebrock highrise intake
350 Corvette cam
Hooker Headers
305 82 Pontiac Block

When I got the car it fired and ran great. I bought all new AC-Delco plugs and wires and swapped them out one at a time. Once done it fired and ran well but it ran out of gas. A friend of mine started pulling the wires and we set it up via the haynes manual...no longer fired. I have tried three different firing sequences and still nothing. Ended up pulling the cap, found TDC, cleaned off the contacts and put the cap back on. Wouldn't fire. Pulled one and two plugs and confirmed spark but it won't fire, just turns.

Any help would be appreciated.

Shawn

Re: New owner need help with firing sequence

I have done that starting from the front right post, then going by the poniac and starting 1 on the front left post and moving around. Like I explained I have tried that sequence and only changed where it started on the cap 1 from the haynes manual, and two from summit racing, 1 the poniac and the other a chevy. I have made sure the sequence is 18436572 just changed where 1 started on the cap as per the above sources.

Source I used besides the haynes manual to find where 1 started on the cap.

Pull #1 spark plug and either stick a wa of paper in the hole or hold your finger there and have a buddy bump the starter until the wad comes flyin out or you feel pressure, this means you're on the #1 compression stroke. Firing TDC is right after, check the balancer and rotate a little further until the timing groove is somewhere on the scale, doesn't have to be super precise. Remove the cap and check the rotor position, it should be pointing at or very close to a terminal. That one is #1, start from there.

And while you are at it, kick your friend in the groin for messing with your stuff.

Re: New owner need help with firing sequence

well the 1 post on the dist is only the "norm" it in fact can be any of the posts on the cap you need to remove the dist cap and the driverside valve cover and forward most spark plug then turn the engine until you feel the top of the piston in the cylinder and both valves are closed... then notice the direction of the rotor and figure out which post it is pointing at that will be number 1

Re: New owner need help with firing sequence

I have done that...kinda. lol

I pulled the number one plug and turned until it shot my finger out and then replaced the cap. I didn't pull the valve cover though.

Quick edit.

When I found teh compression stroke I noted where the rotor (front right post) and started there.

Re: New owner need help with firing sequence

if you found the compression stroke then there is no need to pull the valve cover... just when working alone it is hard to turn the engine and hold you finger over the hole... without a remote start button

Re: New owner need help with firing sequence

Could the 350 vette cam make any difference or am I not doing something right?

Re: New owner need help with firing sequence

Once you get #1 cylinder on compression stroke and you've ID'ed the #1 tower on the distributor cap:

Make sure you know which cylinder is No. 1 (on the engine) and verify that you're counting off the firing order on the distributor clockwise.

Re: New owner need help with firing sequence

I am going to pull the cap again tonight when I get back from work and take a look to see if i did it wrong and try again.

Before I do could the vette cams have anything to do with this not firing now? When I first replaced the plugs and wires I seem to recall the wiring to be totally different than what I have seen now.

Re: New owner need help with firing sequence

the "vette cam" is just a buzz word for anything still chevy but not a corvette... and no it wouldnt cause any problems with this... unless the FLUX CAPACITOR is out of misalignment

Re: New owner need help with firing sequence

you are counting the cylinders right?
drivers side from front of the engine to the back is 1357 and the pass from front to back is 2468

Yup.

Got it going today. Found true tdc, pulled the cap and found the rotor was pointing to the right of where I thought it was before. Pulled the wires and started over and it fired.

thanks for all the suggestions.
