'85 305 with 64cc heads

I have a 1985 305 which I have been told is 9.5 from the factory. The motor has a comp xe256 cam and I was wondering what the new compression ratio would be if I used a new set of Edelbrock E-tec 170s (64cc) that I have, given standard gaskets and measurements.

Is that the original short block we're thinking about putting the E's onto?

Yes, as far as I am aware. The story is that I have a 350 block at the machine shop but it has been there for over a year and I keep getting the one more week story. I cant keep my money all tied up in a project so was thinking about putting the heads and new intake on the 305 to hold me over. I dont know when or if the motor will be done but I have bills and the wife wants me to pay with the motor money, which I dont see as a terrible idea at this point.

I empathize with your pain. I fear that if you bolt those E's on the 305 you'll end up regretting that move. Reason, they're just a little too large for that small displacement on the street. You could probably get by and make her happy but, put your foot down! Wait a while for the 350 and strap the E's on it. When hammer time comes, that's where those boys will show and perform. You'll be happy in the long run..

BTW, those are the exact heads I'm running on my much larger 363.

Regards

I know thats what I should do just getting impatient. Just thinking that it would provide me with a little fun until the 350 got done.

How does 363 run with these heads? I have heard good things so hopefully I'm not disapointed.

Your 350 has been at the shop for a YEAR and it's still not done? Go get it out of that shop and take it somewhere else. A month or two of "kick the can" might be livable, but not a year.

Agreed- don't put that stuff on a 305 just becuase they won't ever build your 350 for you. Fix the REAL problem- getting the 350 to a shop that cares about your business.
