Hello all... I have two problems...
First off thank you all, this is my first post but I've read a lot. But I couldn't find my exact problem.
First off about the car. I got it from a friend at work a few months ago. And her late husband worked on it and parts didnt need to bemade for it just had to fit or be able to be made to fit.
I felt said for it so I bought it for 800, and have put twice that into it.
Ok I dont know much about cars but I'm learning working with my dad on this, we have:
Changed alll four complete brakes
Replaced main metal brake line (was smashed against the wheel well)
Rebuilt the throttle body
replace the fuel pump and filter
Replace the thingy of tubes that goes in the tank
Replaced the vent on the tank
Replaced the serpentine belt
Replaced the oil and gaskets
Cleaned alot of gunk out of the pistons and heads
Replaced shocks and struts
Replace Plugs and wires
Replaced distributor cap
Replace exhaust pipe, muffler, tip (was missing)
I think thats it, I'm sure I missed something. Only fluid we havent touched is trans.
Seems all stock 305, 3.1, automatic... not sure if its an Iroc.
Ok, now my first problem seems easy. Gas tank keeps building up pressure. When I remove the cap theres a pressure releaseing hiss. As I said we replaced the vent so dad says it can't be that. I'll pull it off anyway and see.
Second, not so easy. Dad's stumped. Ok its my daily driver, I drive about a half hour to and from work. When the engine gets hot it will start to "jerk" every once in awhile like it's not getting gas but dosnt stall. But only sometimes when i stop at a light it will idle funny and when I start to go it will stall.
A guy at a local auto parts store suggested vapor locking (oh thats something I missed, fuel rubber hoses on engine replaced) Dad dosnt think so... says no pipes are close enough.
Any thoughts?
And thank you all, this has been a great place to learn as I go.

Ok if it is a 305 then it is not a 3.1. The 305 is a v-8 engine and the 3.1 is a 6 cyl. It sounds like your purge valve is not working. This is the small round black thing next to your radiator (On the opposite side as the battery) On the top is a square valve with some wires and tubes going into it. Check that. Also you say "When it gets hot" How hot is that? What does the temp gauge say when its doing that?

What you are calling the tank vent is the vapor check valve. It is designed to hold pressure in the tank (Up to a certain point, then it will allow it to escape if it gets to high) And allow air into the tank as the fuel is sucked out of the tank by the fuel pump (To prevent a vacuum)

Yea it's a 5.0.... 3.1 was my last car... haven't gotten to check that valve yet... I'm a Chef and its been a busy week and it's my main ride so I can't have dad look at it while I'm at work... at the latest I'll check it friday morning... thanks for the help and I hope thats it. Oh and another thing dad did to it... most of the old emission control tubes are removed and thier holes plugged... none of them were hooked to anything anymore.

Re: Hello all... I have two problems...
Ok first freezing rain sucks...
Ok i got to the purge valve today.
hoses were all dry rotted.
Ok I don't know how it's suppose to look and the Chilton book dosn't mention it so I'll describe how it was.
There's a metal hose leading up (fuel tank?), that connects to a rubber hose that connects to the valve. Then from the other side of the valve you have two size hoses leading back down to a connector that puts them back into one hose. That leads to the canister with the wires on the top and a plastic hose on top that leads nowhere.
I blew through the valve... it seems to work... i have the big hose size have to go get the little.
No think I found it in Chilton. Gonna go try to figure it out.
Update:
Ok through a diagram I found I figured out how it all hooked up. Plastic formed hose to the throttle body was broken, so it got replaced with a rubber hose for now, maybe forever if it works. And dry rotted hoses replaced. All seems to be hooked up right and...
... its idle is better but didn't drive it due to weather, so I'll let you all know after work tomorrow. Thanks Again all.
Oh and how does the canister come apart? I wanna check the filter because if its like everything else on this car its 22 years old and needs replacing.

Update: Took off the canister, bottom was rounded to seeming way to take it apart, pulled at a few spots but didnt want to bust it.
