Re: what valve springs????
The springs need to be matched to the cam. buy them as a set. Remember that all important valve job while the heads are off. Use good clamp seals on your valve stems. dont use the cheap umbrella ones.
I have several new cams here in my shop with matched springs. I have new lifters and valve seals for you application.
This is new never used stuff. Let me know if you are interested.

Re: what valve springs????
If they're stock heads, without any machine work whatsoever, then neither of those cams will work as they have too much lift for the factory configuration. .470-.480" lift is about all a stock head can take (one has to measure to be 100% certain), before the bottom of the retainer hits the top of the guide boss.

Re: what valve springs????
Changing the springs doesn't change the fact that the valves are the same length, which dictates at which height the springs sit at.

Re: what valve springs????
Either cam is way too big for a 305 TPI engine without any work to the heads.
Just because you can change springs and retainers to survive the lift doesn't mean you'll be happy with how it runs.
I'm just suggesting to look more into a reasonable cam choice.
Here is the recommendations for the 08-601-8 cam from Comp.
http://compcams.com/Cam_Specs/CamDet...?csid=217&sb=0
Both spring recommendations are for a beehive design which will require different retainers. The 918's will fit the stock spring pockets but you'll need to measure the install height before assuming anything.
You'll also need to check for piston-to-valve clearance and if the pushrods will rub in the slots of the head.
