Re: Gear drive in a tpi
yes it will fit but there is no point, also the noise created sometimes is picked up by the knock sensor, its best to leave gear drive for race cars.....

Re: Gear drive in a tpi
Gear drives only sound good when they're in someone else's car. When it's in your own car, they're very annoying.
I had a gear drive in my car for one day. I yanked it out and put a good chain back in.

What is the advantage of a gear drive? Much lower failure rate?

If it's important to you, just unplug the knock sensor, run premium, and keep an ear out. Be aware that there are noisy gear drives and quiet ones. If it's used make sure it's the right one.

bottom line is fuel injection and gear drives dont mix. so no u cannot put gear drive on ur TPI 350, swap to carb and u can but thats really shooting youself in the foot....

It's kinda like like the coffee can mufflers on Civics, it's not my thing but if that's what they want who am I (or you) to judge? In a practical sense it's not going to really hurt anything if he doesn't let it knock. The TPI is not going to care how his crank and cam are connected as long as it holds the timing.

Being fuel injected has nothing to do with running a gear drive, and yes he can put it on there.

well as long as people ask us for how to do something they are going to recieve our advice and our criticism. IMO you should never recomend people to disconect sensors just so they can run a pointless part, lots of things could cause an eninge to knock and with his sensor unpluged it COULD lead to engine failure. All just so he can MAYBE fool someone into thinking he has a supercharger...What happens when someone finds out he doesnt hell look stupid. Its like runnin around bragin bout havin a big johnson, what u gonna do when a girl takes u up on an offer to see how big it is. Your gonna feel mighty dumb lol Dont fake hp make it. Just what we need.... John Doe: "Man me and my R iced out Civic just blew the doors off that camaro!!! And man that thing had a supercharger did u hear it!!! I must make like 1000hp!!!Hondas for life dude!!!"

Re: Gear drive in a tpi
You dont need to disconnect the sensor depending on what exactly you use and how you install it. I even know someone who used to post here that ran a noisy drive. So if you want to give out bad advice, keep telling people it cant be done.

The only knock relevant here is spark knock. He doesnt need to unplug it, many people run them with FI. If he wants it, let him have it. What rlcers think shouldnt be top priority list for car modifications.

If you want to surprise people, spend your money on something that will actually make your car go fast. Then, when your engine sounds nice n' stock, they will get their surprise.

Side note: sort of related, has anyone actually ever recorded what the knock sensor picks up if a gear drive has been installed? Kind of curious...

Knock counts. I see everyone say the KS and gear drives don't mix. Never seen anyone put up actual KS data.

You don't gain any speed by any form of timing set over another. Just get a double roller.

If there's nothing wrong with what you have, then just leave it. Don't go tearing your engine apart if you don't need to, this is how you start messing things up. As far as making the car faster, start doing some searches on 3" exhaust and headers. Rear end gears (3.42 is a perfect ratio) help also.

if im not mistaken the only point of a gear drive is for absolute reliability and never having to replace a timing chain

Re: Gear drive in a tpi
I had in the past. Kind of pointless to put up a log file that shows no knock counts. If you have a PJ "quiet" drive installed right, it wont set it off. Tim Burgess from here was running a PJ "noisy" drive without problems.

Re: Gear drive in a tpi
A friend o mine runs a pete jackson "Noisy" gear drive. He had to disconnect his knock sensor due to it. Now, does that have to be disconnected all the time? Who's to say? Maybe. I just know that I cannot stand to ride in his car due to the annoying whine from the gear drive (ESPECIALLY with the t-tops off!) He likes it, though. Me personally, I like the sound of a deep-toned exhaust, but maybe thats just me... Plus my exhaust system actually made the car a little faster.

To be honest with you, sounds to me like they've got a gear drive they're trying to unload on somebody.
Can we assume:
1) The car is in running condition at the present time.
2) There is nothing specifically wrong with your timing chain.
3) Some day, you'd like the car to have more power.
If 1, 2, and 3 are "yes", that gear drive is about Step #143.
Step 1: Tune-up - spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, air & fuel filter, O2 sensor, fresh and regular oil changes.
Step 2: Sub-frame connectors (should be part of any 3rd gen, IMO).
Step 3: Exhaust - headers, high-flow cat, cat-back.
Step 4: Polyurethane suspension bushings and mounts all around.
Step 5: Camshaft upgrade. This is where you buy a new double-roller timing chain set.
Step 6: TPI upgrades.
Step 7: Head porting.
See where this is going? You don't need that gear drive where you're at.
By the way, your engine has a roller lifter cam (if it is a factory 350 TPI engine). The chances of that gear drive being for a factory roller lifter cam are pretty small.

Re: Gear drive in a tpi
My 2 cents: Most engines that are of the extreme nature that require the precision timing achieved by gear drives, typically go with belt drives (at least the one's that we put out). Everything else we recommend a high quality double, such as a Cloyes or Comp. For us, gear drives sell simply because they sound cool. That's all.
How did they determine that your current timing set "was not that good?" If it actually DOES need replacing, as everyone has agreed on: go with a double roller.

You'll need gaskets for the water pump and front cover, and possibly oil pan. You'll also need a harmonic damper puller and installer (sometimes, but not always, contained in the same kit), and gear puller.
We still haven't established why you are replacing the timing chain.

Is this the same guy that tried telling you that you needed the gear drive? Sounds to me as if they're just trying to make a quick buck.
If you hook up a timing light, is it semi-erratic? Did they remove the distributor cap and hand rotate the engine back and forth to check for slack in the timing chain? 2 signs of a timing chain that's actually worn.

Re: Gear drive in a tpi
I have a Pete Jackson "quiet" gear drive in my 383 and everytime I start the engine I get at least 30 knock counts because of the gear drive. Sometimes my scanner reads 64 knock counts at startup. At idle I get no counts and at WOT I may get 2 or 3 but that's pretty much it.

I never thought about the flywheel teeth. Good point! I also just realized that all of my knock tables in the prom were set for a 305 knock sensor and I have a 350 knock sensor.
