Time to upgrade cam?

Alright, I have a 305, Now Ive been doing small mods here and there, basically I just want a decently fun 305, no need for a 350. Im thinking about doing a cam swap. But I dont know much about cams so Im just gonna ask for help from all the gurus out there. Mods are Hooker Headers 2055s, Hooker offroad 2.5inch y-pipe, dynomax 2.5inch cat back, Smog Delete, AC Delete, rear end swapped to 3.42, and most likely a carb swap in the near future seeing as my qjet is giving me problems. Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Re: Time to upgrade cam?

Sounds like you mainly want street use. I would say a 600 cfm carb is about the right size. As for the cam, CCA-K12-210-2 from summit is an entire kit. It has springs and chain too. That should help with power. Mild porting on the exhaust side with a dremel might help too. Your powerband will always be 300-500 rpm's higher then a 350 with the same cam.

The High Energy series is a single pattern type cam. The dual pattern type is typically better for overall powerband.

I'd suggest the K12-242-2 instead. Same intake duration, but a better overall profile which will give you better low-end torque while still giving more peak power. Even the lower duration K12-238-2 would give a broader powerband with better peak power, and would be less likely to have retainer-to-guide interference problems.

I'd also suggest keeping the q-jet. You aren't going to find a better street performance system than the factory computer controlled system, and whatever it costs to fix would be less then buying new carb and distributor, and some means to lock up the torque converter - to say nothing of little details like getting the throttle arm geometry for the throttle valve cable right.

Re: Time to upgrade cam?

The problem with a cam swap is while you have everything off and apart, you might as well upgrade them. Then it snowballs into a huge project that costs a lot more than you expected.

The biggest thing is to upgrade your valve springs to work with the higher lift camshaft. You dont want to trust the stock 25 year old ones.

Re: Time to upgrade cam?

I have used the cam I mentioned before with good luck, but five7kid has a good point about the dual pattern. Single pattern cams are for more specific applications.

It is a pain to switch from a cc carb. If you do swap carbs, you need a lock-up controller, dizzy, a handful of linkage parts (gets expensive to but the right ones, but they do make em) and I have to be forgetting a few things. Maybe a fan controller if it's electric, but I'm not sure on that.

Of the cams I've run in 305s, my favorite is COMP's 12-388-4. With a B&M TorkMaster2400, you will have traction problems. I did this to an '85 L69 Camaro, with 3.42:1, and 700R-4. Excellent idle, strong to 5000.

The radiator fan control on the factory carb'd engines was independent of the ECM. I believe only the L69 got electric radiator fan in '85, anyway, while the '86-'87 LG4's had it.

The COMP 12-388-4 would certainly be a good butt-dyno cam. Just like TPI, for which it was designed, it's about low end torque. But, it dies off at a fairly low RPM, and with more stall, you can easily accommodate more duration and increase overall power (and decrease ET).
