Valve to Piston Playdoh...What do you see?

This is the exhaust on #1. It is showing a lot of room for sure but something just didn't look right to me...like where the valve actually touched the playdoh maybe?

What do yo think?

Mine did something like that. I guessed it to be that the stuff buldged over the valve and got pinched when the valve closed.

Playdoh isn't the best stuff to use, it's kind of springy and elastic. Modelling clay works better.

Re: Valve to Piston Playdoh...What do you see?

Since that's the last valve on the end it's an exhaust valve, which is smaller than the intake. Since the relifs are the same size on both sides of the piston (so they can be installed in any cylinder) you'll have tons of radial clearance around the exhaust valve like you are seeing there.

Try the intake valve on that same cylinder as well- raidal clearance will be a tighter on the intake.

Yea intake looks normal. Thanks guys, I am sitting pretty. Showing 0.268 intake clearance...and I thought I was gonna be tight with this .600" lift cam.

Not a prob. Mine hasn't run (consistently) for a couple years but will hopefully be on the road in a week or so!

Re: Valve to Piston Playdoh...What do you see?

I also recommend modeling clay.

You went through all the trouble to install clay on the piston, torqued the head down, installed and adjusted rockers, rotated the crank to check piston to valve clearance and only did the exhaust??

Looks like you have lots of room. Those are very deep valve reliefs on a flat top piston. How many CC's are the reliefs?

Use a razor blade and slice through a section. It makes taking a measurement easier.

Re: Valve to Piston Playdoh...What do you see?

I agree on the modeling clay however the Playdoh was at hand and after seeing all this room I know I'm clear.

I only made one solid lifter so did one valve at a time. But, not thinking ahead I didn't realize I could have covered both reliefs with Playdoh and just switched the valvetrain over to the intake so I pulled the head again.

Didn't use a razor blade either, just a thin feeler gauge. The Playdoh being much softer didn't need anything very sturdy to cut through it cleanly.

From the paper work the original buyer gave me with the shortblock they are -5.4cc reliefs.

That number on the top of the pistons and the valve reliefs tell me those are the same flat tops I had last year. They are protrue forged wisecos for a 4.03 bore and 5.4cc valve reliefs.
