What Edelbrock heads & manifold for 305
A business associate has access to some discounted Edelbrock equipment. I'm considering getting a set of heads, cam, intake manifold and headers for my L69 305 HO. I also have to keep it California smog legal. I was considering getting a turnkey ZZ4 but it's $4900. My friend is thinking he can get this stuff for around $1500. Any good stories about edelbrock heads and intake manifolds? I'm convinced on their headers, #68742. The "Y" pipe is included and already set up for my 4-bolt cat. They have air tubes, a heat riser and a o2 bung, and they're resonably priced at $480 before the discount. But what heads and what manifold and cam? Part numbers if you have them. I just want to breath a little more life into the ol' girl. She'll never see a drag strip or a street race. Thanks in advance.

Keep your current heads. They'll do fine with cam, intake, and headers. Instead of spending a grand on Edelbrock heads, have your stock heads freshened up with 1.94" intake valves, cut-down guides for positive-type stem seals, a little port clean-up work, and new valve springs and retainers.

How about manifold and cam. Should I then just keep my stock aluminum manifold if I keep the stock heads? How much would a machine shop charge for the head work with new valve springs and retainers?

You're probably looking at $5-600 for that kind of head work.
A Performer EGR intake, p/n 3701 would do well.
Cam, something like a Comp XE262.

Re: What Edelbrock heads & manifold for 305
Can I post a question relating to this thread? I just did a thread on the engine swap section but I getting ready to race in NASA with my 84 Z and I can only use OEM parts to stay in my class.I'm building a 83 crossfire motor for it that has 175hp stock. What hpstock does the L69 have and is it the only motor with aluminum intake. I'm trying to get all the best OEM parts off the 3rd gen cars.Any other advice on other parts would help too, struts sway bars etc.
thanks Leebo

L69 stock H.P. is 190. I believe the aluminum manifold came on the LG4 also, but I could be wrong.

I would buy a set of 305 vortec heads and a Edelbrock performer vortec intake. This is if you want to keep the 305.

Stay far away from the Edelbrock headers, they're horrible. The pipes dont allow for good spark plug access, the y-pipe is crap, and various other little things. Did you see my sticky post about headers and exhaust at the top of this forum?
The Edelbrock Performer Air Gap is good however, and you cant go wrong as long as it has the EGR. If not, then the regular Performer I know works and is smog-legal.
Edelbrock heads are good for stock engines. Are you planning on keeping the 305? I'm not sure if they have 305 heads or not.
Also, they dont make cams but they have several cams they repackage from other companies.
