which heads to use? help please.
HI Im building up another 350 but doing a cheap build.
Heres what I have.
a 70's 4bolt block bored .040"
speed pro hyper flat tops 9.6 cr with 64cc heads
stock rods, Thanking of putting arp bolts in.
stock crank.
Heres my problem. I have a set of 80's 305 truck heads and and a set of 70's 202 truck heads. The 305 heads are in good shape yet as on valve seats and so. the 202's are redy for a valve job witch I dont want to pay for. Im going to port and polish the heads my self. This will be my 3rd set of porting.... What heads should I use. I know I will have more compression with the 305 heads but will my flow good enough to get around 350hp crank hp with the 3rd biggest summit brand cam summit sells. \
Thanks

Attached - I couldn't help myself. FAIL.
ok, on to your actual question![Smilie](https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Which cam part number? I think summit makes straight and split patterns. I'm thinking you mean the 224/234 cam?
I'd use the 305 heads. When fully ported they will work better. Valve size is a small part of the equation. They will increase your CR (port the chambers to help that). The other heads will drop your CR too much.
Do the math on those speed-pro pistons. They miscalculated in the books, they actually have a 1.54" compression height, so you'll have terrible quench and about 9.2:1 CR. ie. make sure you zero deck the block.

haha... Thanks sonix!! I didnt know they miss measured.. I was hoping for 10.5:1 cr. What will zero decking the block do? I was thinking the 234/244 .488 .510 cam? would that be a good choice? Thats the cam Im running In my car right now and I like it. would The .488 .488 be any better..
I want to build the engine to have max torqe at 5000 rpm.. How much can you shave down 305 heads so when I take them in I sound like I know what Im doing. What's the most ill be able to get my compression up with these pistions

Re: which heads to use? help please.
You don't want/need to plane the heads.
Zero deck the block. If you don't enlarge the chambers you'll have close to 11:1 CR. I enlarged the chambers to about 64cc and have 10.3:1 with the same pistons, decked block, etc.
Those cams are pretty lame, i'd really recommend using a comp/lunati/etc one. Something with a more aggressive grind to it.
The 234/244 would work ok though.
