I think my instrument cluster is screwed..

ok... I'm QUITE sure my instrument cluster is done, but I was wondering if guys can confirm this for me.

Basically, my car has sat for a long time (engine project).

Finally got it driving on the road last weekend, and I noticed that my speedometer along with the odometer isn't working. I've also noticed that my gas gauge was acting funny (moving all over the place).

I had it hooked up to datalog, and through my laptop I can read vehicle speed.

I also decided to fill up the gas tank, figuring that maybe the float had been stuck after all these years. The gas gauge did go to full, and so far seems "ok".

What do you guys think? I'm calling the instrument cluster at this point.. at least for the speedo/odometer.

Obviously the VSS is hooked up, and I am getting a signal through the ecm.

Also to note, THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WAS NEVER removed.

thx!

I'd take it out, reseat the connector, and check the grounds. A bad ground will do what you describe.

Do you mean the ground cables in the engine? If so, the ground cables in the engine bay are good (checked them over many times already).

If not, then could you tell me where they are? I've only pulled apart the dash a couple of times, and it was because I didn't know what I was doing (10 years ago... when I was experimenting around). Or I guess I could just start looking for grounds attached to the body. But the interior was never taken apart.. for this project.
