can i use head #14101083 on a 305?

looking to replace 14102187 swirl heads with a set of heads from a 350 (cause I have a set laying around). Will the 1/4" difference in bore size cause a problem? Any help is appreciated very much...thanks

You are better off with the 187s than the 083s with their larger chambers. That is unless you are going to supercharge it or hit it hard with nitrous.

To answer your question the 083 heads will fit with no problems on your 305. Ever notice that the same head gaskets fit 305/350's?

Re: can i use head #14101083 on a 305?

thanks guys...I was hoping with a thin head gasket I could overcome the larger chamber and get the compression back up with the larger chambers?
any thoughts

Why are you considering changing the heads? Are you changing anything else?

Out of curiosity, what makes you want to dump the tbi for a Holley with no feedback? Have you maxed out the tbi's flow capability?

Re: can i use head #14101083 on a 305?

mostly because when I change something I dont want to constantly have to change the chip and I can also go to multiple spark discharge.

So you would rather go into the carb constantly, changing jets, air bleeds, and power valves/springs.

You can go MSD without switching to Carb. I would actually go Crane Hi6 rather than MSD.

The 083s have 65ish CC chambers vs. the 56cc chambers of your 187s. That will drop your compression more than 1 full point, even with .016" compressed rubber embossed 350 steel shim gaskets!

I would even stay away from the worlds. The aluminum ZZ4 heads are easily obtainable and work even better.

If you look well enough you can find them in new, take-off condition for 1/3 to 1/2 that figure. $500-$800.00.

They are 58cc chambers.

Just an example of where they can be found. These are sold, but I see probably 1 pair a month on the classifieds here.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/engi...-aluminum.html

You can still get them brand new but you might as well go aftermarket if you decide to go that way.

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

The alternative would be the 56cc Trickflows with 175cc intake ports. (1.94/1.50 valves, but 245/180 cfm of flow @ .450 in a 3.776" bore)

The trickflows will run you about $1,000+ shipping, brand new, with warranty.

This build attest to the power of Trickflows, even on a high mileage less than perfect long block. The Edelbrock TES headers and remaining portion of the exhaust system are less than ideal. The little low-rise performer EGR intake was chosen for smog testing and the CCC Q-Jet system was left stock. This engine had ALOT of un-trapped power waiting to be released.
