Failed Ohio's Emissions Test...Help

Went to get an E-Check today and failed miserably...I passed all the test except for NOX. The limit is 1121.0 but my Firebird read 2320.1

What does this mean? They told me combustion temperature was wayyy too high.

What do I gotta do to pass...I need plates on this car badddd! These towing companies that work out for my apartment complex are very, very eager to tow my 'Bird...

How old is your cat? My car passed so cleanly (at 165,000 miles), despite no smog pump, thanks to a brand new cat, it isn't even funny.

NoX reduction and combustion temp control are the primary purposes of the EGR valve. Is it still there and functional?

Re: Failed Ohio's Emissions Test...Help

Yes everything is all original and still in tact...I have poor vacuum...sometimes I have to plug the hose connected to the air cleaner housing to get it to start and stay running smoothly w/o hesitation. The carburetor is another issue, the previous owner told me it needs a choke pulloff. Well, it sounds like I need a EGR and new cat/convertor....How much work is it to replace the EGR? A professional will have to replace the cat...Any suggestions on the cat? Does it matter what brand I get?

In general, it's a bad idea to just start buying parts. The EGR may in fact be fine but doesn't have enough vacuum to open for example. It sounds like you should have someone with the skills and tools diagnose it.

Rubbing alcohol is mostly water. You want to use something pure like "dry gas" or the "guaranteed to pass" stuff.
