Engine HP rating confusion

Hey yall,
Im trying to get the HP/TQ specs for the 1992 Z28. I found this on here and Im confused about the HP/TQ rating for the LB9 V8. Looks like there are two different ratings...one for 205HP/285TQ...and another for 230HP/300TQ. Now, when I go to buy one how can I tell the difference and how do I know what LB9 the one I wanna buy has?
I looked at the VIN breakdown and it just says...F = 305 ci V8 LB9 (1987-1992). Dosent look like there is two seperate codes for two different LB9's. I dont think Im overlooking anything, maybe theres a unknown secret or something. Please help me out with this...I'd hate to buy a vert with 205HP when I could buy one with 230HP.

Thank you very much, I appreciate any help I can get with this one. Oh heres the chart breakdown with engine codes and HP/TQ ratings.

Re: Engine HP rating confusion

If it still has the sticker center console) look for the "N10" option. If it's not there, the easiest way would likely be to look at the catalytic converter(s) under the right side of the car. If there's two, it's the 230 hp (N10) car, if not it's the 205 hp.

Re: Engine HP rating confusion

Sorry. I meant to write "Sticker in the Center Console."

It's just a listing of all the option codes. Look for the code "N10."

Re: Engine HP rating confusion

Even easier is what kind of trans it has. auto get the weeker motor, manual gets the stronger motor.
The exhaust is not the only diff. The cam is diff too the auto got the smaller "peanut" cam in it.

Didn't they all have the same cam in 1992?

Re: Engine HP rating confusion

Did they? I didn't think so but I could be wrong. I just wouldn't think that the dual cat setup would be worth a 15 horse gain on a 305. I wouldn't even think a full aftermarket exhaust would net that big of a gain.

Re: Engine HP rating confusion

The Automatic had 205hp, the manual had 230hp.

It says A4 for automatic 4gear, it says M5 for manual 5gear.

Yea.

That subject has been beat like a rented mule but this still comes up a lot. The peanut cam went bye bye in 1990 on TPI cars.
