i couldn't find my old thread so im going to start a new one. i have a 86 305 tpi. the car has given me so many problems. the main problem is the car has no power and doesnt idle right. i had a local shop do a cam swap and rebuild the top end. bad mistake. i had gotten the car back ran like a champ. after i would say 100 miles car was a dog. it was slower then slow and i had to turn the idle up for it to even stay running.

this is what is done... its a 86 305 carb engine converted to efi. wiring harness, ecm, and all sensors are from a 86 tpi motor. car has crane cams (compucam 2030) with new lifters, double roller timing chain, accel 19lb injectors, bbk afpr, headers, full exhaust, bla bla... car runs awful. just recently i took the engine apart and re-did everything. i replaced head gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, sealed everything up good and adjusted the valves according to proper sequence. all sensors are new. ecm is new. prom is new. and the car will still not idle or run right. oh and car has msd out of tank fuel pump if that makes any difference... well if i can get help here that would be greatly appreciated otherwise i just think this is it and get a new engine and go with a 350..

Any chance you have a plugged converter?

By "turn the idle up", do you mean you changed the programming or turned the minimum idle air (often confused for an idle speed adjustment) screw?

 

well no i mean reprogram for higher idle. i have a stock chip and a custom chip with just a little adjustments to the bin. but even so the car only has a cam basically so it should run like it always did. i have no cat so that theory is gone but yes before i had any engine work done it was the cat that was clogged.

all in all there has to be something im overlooking. i have no idea what the shop did below the heads. for all i know the crank to cam timing could be off. but i highly doubt it. like i said this was a carb engine. when everything was stock it ran great there was no problems. car had decent power for a 305. and idled at 550. now if the idle is less then 1200 it cuts out. this isnt my daily driver so im not in a rush to get it done but i would like to drive it someday lol.

well after alot of money being spent into this engine i just decided to do the lt1 swap into my car. couldnt figure out why it was running so bad so i just decided to take it out. if anyones interested in a full tpi setup or the 305 block just pm me. i might be posting it for sale but for now its sitting in the garage.
