Whats this sound like?
Im going to begin with saying i have an 87 Iroc with a 305tpi and a 700r4. Just yesterday i replaced the oil pan and when i finished up this morning i turned it on and everything was fine. waited a couple hours turned it on and took off and about 5 blocks from home it shut off on me. It was running just fine like always, it didnt sputter or anything, felt like i just turned the key to off. i pull over and try to start it it cranks just fine but doesnt start. I think ive narrowed it to no spark because i hear the fuel pump come on and it cranks just fine, actually too good i cant hear or feel it firing, it cranks faster than usual. I just turned 18 and this is my first car of about 6 months so dont be afraid to point out simple things.

Re: Whats this sound like?
It sounds like the ignition module in the distributor has failed. I would see if someone can test it or just replace it. Any local parts store should have them... they are about $30-$40.
Hope this helps!

Thanks, I did replace the module and that fixed my problem but now have a new one (dont know if they're related) the car idles extremely rough and i can smell lots of fuel. When i went to adjust the timing i disconected the tan wire and set it at 6 and the car ran smooth. when i plugged the wire back in the car began to run rough again. What exactly am i doing when i disconnect the tan wire.

Re: Whats this sound like?
Disconnecting the EST (electronic spark timing) wire forces the ignition to fire off of the distributor (start mode, retarded). The timing is set like this because the the ecm isn't moving it around.

Re: Whats this sound like?
check the connections at the module and the module itself. Many a time youll get a junk part out of the box, or if your like me can put a connector half on or not at all.
