Are these heads a lost cause?
So the engine in my project car never ran then I saw I had coolant in the oil so started the disassembly process. Popped the ehads and realized why I was getting zero compression on the cylinders also. The valves on a few of the cylinders were frozen open. Also I had a pool of coolant in a couple of cylinders also. Im just wondering if these heads are salvagable or if I should just use them as anchors.

They are fixable, IF you want to spend a pile of money on them.
Better to take that money and add some more and get a nice set
of new heads that will make some POWER.

Yeah, the only reason I ask if they are salvagable is because Im building up a new motor with new heads and was wondering if I could tell people thye need to be rebuilt and machined to be used. I dont like ripping people off on heads that are shot. Thanks

I think you'd be spending more time than they're worth. It would take a while to clean them up. I'd buy new ones.

I'd like to dip them in a rust dissolver, just to see what they'd look like afterwards.
Deck, valve job/guides, new valves and they should be fine.
What heads are they? I'm wondering if they are worth that cash?

Those are actually very decent castings, one of the better production line heads. All those heads really need is dissassembled, hot tanked, probably decked, new guides and a valve job. You'd have some money into them, basically having them completely rebuilt, but it would probably only be a few hundred dollars, maybe less if you did the R&R stuff yourself. You have to have them crack checked though, before anything else is done. I'd say go for it though.

hot tank is caustic, not acidic. It'll get rid of grease, but not rust.
It needs to be acid dipped.

look at this chamber. If this is a casting flaw or sever corrosion, these heads are trash.

Holy Crap!!!! I've never seen worse lookin heads...!!!!!
I have factory replacement heads 193's that are identical to the 083's. They have 50.000 Kms on them and i just took them off to throw AFR's on the GTA. They are like new..... and never smoked.

The 193s are the heads that should have come on the TPIs though. The swirl port heads are NOT to blame for the low-performing truck engines. The TBI truck engines made 40 HP more than any of the older 882/993/624 headed engines using the same cam and a more strict emissions standard.

I'll have to take a closer look at the 193 ports/ bowl area..... I never noticed any difference but I wasn't looking too hard either... hehehe I was too busy drooling over the AFR's
I thought that I read on Mortec?sp that the 193's were factory replacements heads for the L98 engine......... & they could have been, but not the exact same casting.
Either way they're sitting on my basement workbench.
I think that your probably better off with new heads just the same...... You can buy heads from Summit for around $600.oo which is less than rebuilding anything.
