Power steering pump pulley removal
I replaced my front end with a serpentine set up from a '91 Silverado today for $117!
I want to clean up the power steering pump unit before putting it in.
The little devil will not come out!
I used a pulley remover, but the pulley will not come off. I did not want to break it so I stopped.
Looking inside there appears to be a hex bolt inside...do I need to remove the hex before using the pulley remover?
Or do I just need to really crank down on it?

Are you using a power steering pump pully puller? The end of the shaft my have a hex shape and a 3/8 threaded hole but the hex is just the end of the shaft, not a bolt. I've had same that were a real bear to remove, be sure to lube the threads on your puller.

There is a difference?
I am using a standard pulley I suppose.
It has a blunt round nose cap.
So I do not have to remove the hex inside the pulley, just get the correct pulley?

Re: Power steering pump pulley removal
I changed mine a few weeks ago and it was tough. I used the rental tool from Advance Auto. I honestly thought I was going to break the tool before it finally started coming loose.

The correct tools can make a world of difference.
You do not have to remove the hex.

Not always. I used to do this all the time in the machine shop, and wouldnt you know it earlier this year I needed to pull the one off on my 89 and it broke before it pulled off. First time out of probably 50 or so pumps I removed pulleys off of.

How in the heck do you get the pulley back on? I thought it was tough getting it off but it seems more difficult to get it back on.

Re: Power steering pump pulley removal
Installation is the reverse of removal!?!
The same tool you use to remove can be used for re-installation.
A little lubrication on the screw helps to crank it down.

Re: Power steering pump pulley removal
To be clear, all you need to install is a bolt, washer and nut. Set the pulley on the shaft. Put the nut and washer on the bolt, then thread it into the pump shaft. Tightening the nut will then push the pully onto the shaft. I dont know the bolt or thread size but When you buy a pump they ususally come with a simple install kit. Your local autoparts store will likely have one or at least have one to show you.

Re: Power steering pump pulley removal
Thank's guys i will try the bolt and washer. I tried heating the pulley with a torch thinking that would expand it enough to just slip on but it wouldn't even think of going on.

Re: Power steering pump pulley removal
Use the install tool to pull it on the shaft not a bolt and:
LUBE, LUBE, LUBE!
If you have grease up on your eyebrows, you might have enough lube on it...

Re: Power steering pump pulley removal
The pully installation tool has a bearing between the nut and the pully. Makes the installation quite trivial. You should be able to get an installer from any reputable auto parts outlet. I've heard too they can even be had from much sleezier institutions such as AutoZone.
