Wheelie?

Ok i have seen some cars do some wheelies but they are making mid 300 to the rear. Now how are they doing that? I will be putting a 383 with 475 at the crank so i should have the power to do one. I just want to know how they are doing it. Im guessing like 4:56 rear ends and what ever else?

Re: Wheelie?

Also you will need to get some drag shocks 90/10 front and 50/50 rear, bu twhy would you want to do wheelies? Keeping the front end down and the rear planted is what makes low ETs.

Re: Wheelie?

Light front end, traction and lots of torque but a good chassis setup can pull the front wheels of a nose heavy car. Instant center, weight transfer, shock settings and spring rate can make a huge difference in how the car launches.

My car makes lots of power and is only slightly nose heavy. I carry the front wheels for about a car length but with less than a foot off the ground and I don't use wheelie bars. I also launch with a transbrake at 5000 rpm.

Re: Wheelie?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if there two identical cars with the same hook and one lifts the front end 2 feet and carries them to the 60 foot line, and one that doesn't lift at all, won't the one that doesn't lift be quicker?

Re: Wheelie?

Normally. You want all the energy to push the car forward not upward. Getting the car to lift will help if you need the extra weight over the wheels for traction.

Re: Wheelie?

That's right. If your wheels are only a few inches off the ground, then you know all 3400lbs or whatever, is on the rear wheels. Hard to break traction once you've got the wheelie going on.
But if you can keep traction with all 4 on the ground, you'll have more energy to go forward with.

oh yea, drag slicks are pretty important for this too

Re: Wheelie?

I would of dreamed of my car doing a wheelie but it sounds like its not to hard. I think it would be sweet to be at a stoplight and pick the front up 5 or 6 inches.
thanks

Re: Wheelie?

ive seen a 13.6 sec mustang pull the tires at least 6 " but it was still only a 13.6.
you deff want to tune the car to go forward as fast as possible. you need to tune it to loose traction and black track the tires. not smoke. then send a little more weight to the rear. to keep the tires planted. thats as good as your gona get.

Re: Wheelie?

with no front suspension limiters, my car picks the fronts up 6" or so and carries them 6 feet or so on motor. 1.55 60'. ~368rwhp
with a 135 shot it picks them up 2-3 feet and carries them 50-60 feet. 1.32 60'. ~425rwhp

3.90 gear, th400, 3050lbs, 28x10.5 slicks, stock type suspension, leaving off the foot brake around 1800 rpms.

Re: Wheelie?

Yea, not going to happen on the streets though roads aren't perfect enough, and you can't put drag slicks on the street.

There was a late '60's AMC in car craft once upon a time that had pictures of him doing a wheelie on the street, at a stoplight. They didn't actually post those pictures because it's so illegal, but they admitted he was right, it was possible.

Re: Wheelie?

I never was thinking my car could ever be possible to do a wheelie. But their is no way you can say that it wouldnt be cool if you was gona race someone or something at a street light and you pull the wheels.

It's all about weight distribution...When I young & stupid, my old '65 VW Bug pulled the front tires REGULARLY on it's skinny street tires, on the street.

Cool looking maybe, highly improbable of happening on the street, but dangerous definitely.

Re: Wheelie?

i think someones been watching a little to much fast n furious

slicks would help quite a bit, maybe you should look into some cheater slicks which are barely legal but you can mount and drive with them i know MT makes em.

and why use a transbrake? takes the fun outta it.

Re: Wheelie?

Suspension tuning, slicks and a very high rear end gear will make you do a wheelie. Please dont try to do this on the street.
