Building a 350 Engine

Okay.. My buddy and I are looking into Building a 350 Engine.. We are going to be putting it into a 88 Camaro.. The Camaro we have has no engine or tranny currently in it..

I have been doing some research and such, but I figured I would get your opinions as we are going to be on a BUDGET.. This is going to be a Poor Mans Race Car :P

For the Price.. WHAT kind of modifications such as Heads, Cams, Valves etc.. etc.. Can I do to this 350..

Its going to probably just be a old 350 out of a late 60's early 70's car.. It has no intake manifold or carb...

Without Boring, Honing, stroking and all that crap.. What can i do and what do you recommend I put on this car..

I want it to run good.. Its going to probably be a purely track car..maybe street now and then.

Thanks,

Matt.

Can you give us an idea of your budget?

Re: Building a 350 Engine

To be honest.. Its kind of going to be a lengthy project most likely but.. My goals would be 300+ hp and/or a mid 12 second all motor car.. maybe better?

I was hoping to spend maybe 3-4 Grand on the motor? maybe 2? 4000 at the Most DEPENDING on what you guys can tell me on what I will need and what it will give me.. I mean.. If I can spend 4000 dollars and ONLY get a 280whp car.. I will want to spend a little more.. You guys know the prices and what I would need probably better than I do..

Lets say the budget is between 3-4k.. What can I get for that? WITHOUT porting/boring etc.. On an old style 350.

Thanks,

Matt.

Unless its an engine with 40,000 miles on it. Youll WANT to bore it.

Re: Building a 350 Engine

it sorta depends on the shop... the shop i use wont even touch it unless it has been hot tanked... and is clean so right there is normally 50-75$ plus now you need new cam bearing and need them installed another 50$
a fresh bore to something like .030 over is really standard about 150-250 depending on the shop... however you will need to purchase your pistons prior to the bore so the shop know what the finished diameter needs to be

Re: Building a 350 Engine

Boring only needs to be done to damaged blocks. Most shops will hone out the block to 30 over.
Hit any machine shop. They usually will have a 350 block laying around that is already cleaned up. I got one of mine for $100 already checked and cleaned.

Re: Building a 350 Engine

im having a 350 built right now costing me 1500 to pretty much have a short block minus the oil pan. what he did was hot tank and check condition of engine. bore 60 over since 30 over still wasnt enough to smooth cylinders regrind the crank and new pistons and rings install my camshaft and he balanced in internally. im still stuck on heads though. i dont have a lot of money left ok i have none. so im thinking about using the heads i have off my 305 they are the 081 heads. just not sure about compression or flow.

Assume the shortblock is okay without rebuilding:

Heads & intake - http://www.sdparts.com/product/SD806...RPMAirGap.aspx . Might seem like a lot, but that's a big chunk of performance right there.

Carb: Holley 650-750 CFM double pumper.

Cam: Comp XE274 flat tappet.

Exhaust: Hedman 1-5/8" longtubes, search for mw66nova's budget exhaust thread based on these headers. For a track car, you can get by for about $400 here and have a good flowing exhaust (essential for power).

Transmission: A TH350 will probably be the least expensive option, even with the swap parts you're going to need. Unless you find a great deal on a stout TH700R-4.

Rear: It'll need beefing up. See the Tech Article linked from the thirdgen.org homepage.
