heat soak starter?

hello gang, am new the forums i own a 91 B4C camaro. i bought it from someone who mention that the starter seemed to be going south so he bought a new one but never gave it to me cause i offered to low of a deal for the car. long story short the starter sometimes clicks and no crank/start but if you try again right after it may work may not. but it will start sooner or later 1-3 tries . it happens when its cold and hot so am not sure about the heat soak. could it just be a starter going bad?

i bought a starter heat wrap hoping it will fix the problem but i see when i install it. i do have a used starter on the side that i might be able to toss in hope it will work or i can always buy a new one. if i do should i upgrade to a remote solenoid starter or mini starter or delco factory type?

thank you

Re: heat soak starter?

If you're running stock compression levels, the factory starter is fine. If you have issues with it not wanting to turn properly hot or cold, I would pull it out and take it to get tested. Even if it functions well on a tester, most will show if there's an issue at hand. Be sure to check the cables going to the starter as well, making sure they have a good connection.

Re: heat soak starter?

I'd look at the easy stuff first. Clean the battery posts and check for corrosion. Check battery voltage.

Re: heat soak starter?

The starter solenoid and or battery cables are defective.

Re: heat soak starter?

i checked the battery connection the ground looks new, the power looks a little old might change that out.

the starter looks like it has a heat shield on it already (did they come stock no right)

i switch the battery out to a new one - now it cranks 1 and then crank starts
before it was crank crank?? start so now i guess am getting closer but the starter must be bad

damm the starter is kinda hard to get to

Re: heat soak starter?

Kragen has it for $147 plus $55 core

thats the one i got. i told the guy behind the counter that i only have a starter from my 91 camaro, and he said thats fine, just bring it in and we'll give you the core value. give it a try

edit: tell them you need a starter for a 1995 Chevy Corvette non-ZR1
