88 camaro - doesnt want to accelerate smoothly - intermittent
Well so here i go trying to explain what going on and what ive done.
Lets first start with what has happened. About a week ago the car started to run like it was missing or something, i drove it for about 10 more miles after the first chug and the car died. Figured out it was the fuel pump. My step brother and I replaced that (just the pump did not replace the wires) the car ran like a champ afterwards, better than when i had purchased the car. Drove the car for 2 days doing over 200 miles. Filled up with fresh gas and got about 4 or 5 miles down the road and when i try to accelerate off the line the car jolts as if you were to (in the middle of accelerating) take your foot off the pedal and slam back on it. Well only thing my step brother and I could think of was the T.P.S. (Throttle Position Sensor) Car made it 2 blocks and on the way home did it again as if i was taking my foot off the gas and slamming back down. Any idea what it might? im clueless at this point

A faulty ignition module can do those things right before it dies completely. They'll usually work ok until they heat up, but not always.
If there is debris in the fuel tank, it can clog the fuel filter and cause similiar symptoms.

Connect a fuel press gauge. Tape it to the outside of the windshield and go for a test drive. Look for fuel press dropping under acceleration.
Have ign module tested.

Decayed, I had my car fixed today. Turned out that the two wires on the bottom of the distributor were going bad.. They were actually going green.. Changed that out and now it runs like a top.. Check those wires maybe yours are that way.

ya thats what i thought too, ive given up though i gave it to a shop, so far there scratching their heads, only thing theyve come up with is the fuel pressure goes down more and more the longer the engine runs. yet the pump works.... lol ya im glad i left it for the pros on this on lol

shot in the dark here but check your map sensor. Mine had the same issue and i dropped about 400$ tryin to figure out the issue and it was a $60 sensor. I did get a new fuel pump, distributor, wires, plugs, and tune up,plus i confused 2 mechanics to make it better, hope it works for you i know how discouraging it is when your car doesnt wanna play nice

i have the same problem with my 91 camaro, it doesn't sound like it is as bad as yours was, but i want to fix it before it gets bad. Does your service engine light turn on and off constantly, and does your car idle higher then usual only some of the time? thats what happens to mine, if anyone could give me some advice.

i dont wanna thread jack but thorpedo you need to figure out what the codes are, doesnt matter what your doing, pull over and use a paperclip to flash your codes off to you else you'll just be stabbing at random problems

in continous to what he said, 91 and 88 setup into the throttle body and sensors and all of that are different. only thing in common is probably the pump thats bout it. sensors are in same place and all but just different ones
but anyways back to myyy problem

Re: 88 camaro - doesnt want to accelerate smoothly - intermittent
If you aren't getting any codes and the fuel pressure is dropping I'd guess that the problem was with your fuel pressure regualtor. The diaphram may have gotten weak or something. A buddy of mine had that happen at the car would just fall on it's face for a second off the line and then BAM! The power was back in full force. His fuel pressure was bleeding off too. Sounds a lot like your problem, so that's my suggestion.

Re: 88 camaro - doesnt want to accelerate smoothly - intermittent
a way to test it would be to crimp your return fuel line with a pair of vice grips or something (crimp not clamp) and see how it runs, if it runs smoother then yea your FPR is shotty its a pretty easy part to replace just dont lose any of the tiny parts and make sure you get a full seal all the way around
