Comp Cams 306 - 383ci
Hi all,
looking for people that have experiece of this cam in either a 383, or 350. I'm building a 383 and was planning to use this, but am having doubts regards drivablity on the street.
Comp Cams "306" LT1 Camshaft, 230 / 244, .510 / .540 112 LSA
Please see tuning discussion here - https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/diy-...eperation.html

306 is popular cam in 383' s with manual.Would need good stall in auto.
Has lots of exhaust timing so better suited to stockish heads with low exh flows rather than aftermarket heads
If you have decent heads then more like 230 / 236 >.550 lift on both sides

LT1 guys have run it on good ported heads with good exhaust flows and still produce 400whp+ on 383's with 11 to 1 compression
my custom grind is very similar duration wise at .050" timing specs, but i have loads more lift.
That cam will make a wide power curve on the top end. great flat hp curve up top so help you dial in your shift points.
Driveability will be ok. using the 730 ecm will require good tuning since that cam has 74.5 degrees overlap. Thats a good amount of overlap. For a 350 that would be hard to tune but doable with the 730 ecm, but on a 383 its much more liveable.

Can use a stock distributor gears since you are not changing to a roller cam. This is about the only time you need to worry about distributor gear.

Re: Comp Cams 306 - 383ci
Just be careful with choosing a cam for the 383 with 6inch rod. Clearance will be your enemy and will probably have to stick with a small base cam as I have just discovered and will be going to a roller cam.

I think it is to much cam for the street with an automatic trans. in a 350. 383 will be ok.

update my experience with a very similar cam. I love it in a 383. Not a bad streetable cam if i do say so myself Runs mid 11's at over 116mph and its not 100% tuned yet, nor does it have proper gears/launch yet. But yet it drives very nicely around town. I just cant tune the idle yet. Idles ok in park/neutral but it gear it tends to want to surge alittle
