stumble

I don't know if this is a carb or ignition problem but sometimes my car stumbles a little when your light on the throttle?
and won't stay at a steady idle it'll bounce between 700 and 900 RPM?

my car is a 82 trans am with a 305 T-10 4-speed.
I have a Edelbrock 1406 carb, and a MSD HEI distributor.

Any help would be great.

Re: stumble

well that i dont know.. my car used to stumble at part throttle then i upped the jetting and its smooth.. maybe the springs are too stiff?? and not letting the needles open fast enough..

then again, smoke usually means rich or oil.. does the motor burn oil??

the motor doesn't burn any oil. I am going to get a calibration kit today. I even adjusted my air fuel mixture a little leaner and I still got the black smoke.
Would a fuel pressure regulator help? I have a Holley 80gph 7.5 psi fuel pump. I thought carbs only need like 4-5 psi
